Oh, how wonderful it must be to have not a care in the world! thought Y/n as she biked to work one morning. She was seventeen and a half, and she often heard her mother say this phrase to her. Y/n was young, yes, and she didn't have back pains every morning yet, and she didn't need to pay taxes yet. But if she didn't have a care in the world, why did she feel so tired and heavy?
After several weeks of deliberation, Y/n finally figured out why she felt so weary. Humans aren't meant to relive the same uneventful routines that occur everyday. She was meant for action! Something new! Something refreshing! So Y/n decided that June 6th would be the day she shook her life up a little bit.
And would you look at that! Today is June 6th. Y/n was set in her mind that she would run away from home for a while. She had grown disinterested in her hometown, where she had lived her drab life. Since her older siblings were never interested enough to play with her during her youth, she had explored every possible avenue of the town, and now it didn't provide the same thrill as it once had.
Before she left home this morning, she wrote a note and stuck it on the fridge for her parents (who were very hardworking people) to see once they got home from work. It's not like they didn't love her! Y/n was sure they did. And Y/n loved them back. That's why she wrote the note, to let them know she was running away and would be back.
Someday.
Y/n still hadn't planned what day that would be.
Well, then, if you're running away, why would you still go to work?
Today was payday, and Y/n wanted her measly paycheck. She wanted enough money to sustain her throughout her adventure. However, going to the cafe she worked at was especially hard today, because only a few hours from now, she would forget about it and truly not have a care in the world.
Y/n worked at a boba shop. Everyone loves boba drinks, for some reason. Hold it in your hand, take a photo of it, post it on Instagram, and instantly get a hundred likes. Y/n could understand why it's so trendy. It tastes good. It looks cute. It's unique. Like, who puts tapioca pearls in milk?
Y/n thought she would love working at a boba shop. She imagined the atmosphere to be really calm and chill and everything to be wonderfully dreamlike, similar to a boba-tea-Instagram-post. But now, after doing the same thing for a year--grab the cup, make the drink, put boba and whatever else in it, grab another cup, make the drink, boba, cup, drink, boba, cupdrinkboba,-- Y/n started to hate boba drinks. She didn't want to look at another one for as long as she lived.
She wondered if it was her thoughts that carried her to work rather than her bike, because she arrived much sooner than she anticipated. She parked her bike, clocked in, and talked to her manager.
"What would happen," Y/n started. "If, theoretically, one of your employees couldn't go to work for a while. Would you give their job to someone else?"
Her manager promptly replied, "If they're on sick leave or on maternity leave, then they get paid time off. If they're on vacation, then they don't get paid."
"Okay, but like, what if they just go missing for a while? Like maybe a month tops?"
Manager raised her eyebrows at this. "Well, I would dread for any of you to go missing."
"No, this is only theoretically," Y/n clarified. "What would you do?"
"Give the job to someone else," Manager said. "Unless they tell me where they are and how long they'll be gone for, I can't really do anything. I would need to fill in the spot."
Y/n tried not to show it, but she was disappointed. She had hoped that Manager would keep her job out of pity if she went missing.
Manager seemed to notice her disappointment. "What? Are you planning on getting kidnapped or something?"
