03: confessions

jake hates the fact that he'll never be able to see his best friend as a best-est of friends. he lets out a frustrated groan as he walks to his class with some of his friends. 

"woah, jake, are you okay?" sunwoo, one of his friends asks, glancing over at his friend. 

"i'm fine." jake lied, avoiding looking at his two friends. 

"jungwon, would you care to join the conversation? it's clear to me that our friend jake is not the best-est of best-est right now. i want to know what's going on!" sunwoo complains, throwing his hands up in the air. 

"chill, sunwoo, i'm sure everything's going alright on jake's side." jungwon shrugs, not finding it amusing of his friend once again worrying about jake. 

"everything's fine, right?" sunwoo once again asks, looking at jake. 

jake makes a miserable face. "y-yeah, everything's just fine." he quietly says in sarcasm. 

"i don't buy it." sunwoo snaps.

"well, then...i'm sorry you don't, but it's completely true!" jake argues, sighing in frustration. 

"sunwoo, just let it go. i'm sure jake will come around sometime." jungwon says, finding it time to cut the conversation before the two really start to argue. 

"but!" 

"sunwoo." jungwon warns. 

sunwoo pouts, sadly. "fine..."

jake is listening to music outside the school's walls. he sits alone by the small stairs that lead down to a small pond. 

"i wanna be myself (i don't care) 아직 낯설다 해도 (just don't care)" jake quietly sings as he eats his lunch. he's so caught up with his song that he doesn't know a pair of students walking towards the quiet pond. that was until he looked up from his lunch. 

"sunghoon?" jake mumbles under his breath. sadly his best friend doesn't hear him as his attention is all on a girl in front of him. do they even notice him? 

he takes his headphones off and lowers the volume, listing to the conversation between the two.

"i...i like you, park sunghoon!" the girl shouts out, blushing all over her face. she waits for sunghoon to answer, clutching her school skirt. 

jake's eyes widen. this is...a confession. he has the urge to leave the two, but, sunghoon voice stops him from doing so. 

"i'm sorry. i'm already in love with someone else." 

in love with some else? who could it be? jake questions in his mind. 

"oh...okay..." the girl says before running away from him, tears already forming in her eye sight. sunghoon sighs in a dreadful way. he turns to leave but his eyes met with jake's. sunghoon's eyes widen in surprise. 

"jake." 

jake stays still in his spot. "er...hey." jake awkwardly greets, dropping his gaze. 

sunghoon walks to take a seat next to jake. "i didn't see you in the morning." sunghoon points out. 

"yeah...i went for a walk so no worries!" jake quickly covers up his feelings. he isn't supposed to act this way, he reminds himself inside his head. "so...another one?" jake trails off. hoping to not seem so interested as he is inside. 

"you heard that?" sunghoon quietly asks, embarrassed. 

"yeah, don't worry i won't tell anyone!" jake assures, smiling widely at his friend. 

sunghoon softly smiles. "it's okay. i'm sure the news is going to spread around the school anyway." there's a pause before sunghoon clears his situation. "i don't understand why they just like me? we never talked before and i'm not always around." 

jake twitches in confusion. gosh, what am i supposed to say now?? jake panics. 

"and...i already found someone else." sunghoon adds, looking at his best friend eye to eye. jake flinches. he could see a sight of sunghoon blushing softly. gosh, why does he make everything so soft and cute?? jake's mind thinks. 

"who...is it...?" jake slowly asks. 

"i'm not sure i should say. i'm scared they wouldn't like it, after all we've known each other the most. i don't wanna ruin what we have." sunghoon admits, looking at the view ahead of them. 

jake's heart thumps faster, every second that passes his heart flutters. 

but...he doesn't know anyone else but myself.........

wait...

WHAT??!

jake's whole day is gloomy and full of fluttering emotions, mostly those "fluttering emotions" are made by sunghoon. and the "gloomy feelings" are when he remembers how he feels about his friend. 

jake is packing his books when he sees sunghoon walking in the class. "hey, sunghoon." jake calls out, hoping his voice doesn't sound as trembling as he is in the inside. 

sunghoon walks over towards him. "wanna walk home together?" 

jake doesn't say anything as he nods in agreement. jake and sunghoon begin their walk home, but as they're walking out the halls a group of students hover at sunghoon. the 3 boys start talking to sunghoon. sunghoon stands there, not knowing what to do. 

"heard about that confession." one of them says between smiles. 

"i can't believe you once again rejected someone!" the other one with dull hair says. 

"geez, what's taking you so long, anyway? plenty of girls are dying to be your girlfriend by now. are you waiting for some type of ideal girl?" 

sunghoon doesn't say anything as he waits for all of them to stop talking. jake stays close besides him, feeling somewhat insecure to even be in this conversation. usually, he's never felt this way when others would talk to sunghoon, but, it feels different now. 

"why does it matter to you guys? i'm sure this doesn't concern in any way. if you're trying to be friends, it's not working. we will be taking our leave now." sunghoon pulls jake by his sleeve and drags him away, not saying anything else to the boys. 

jake could hear them talking about sunghoon. 

"what the hell is his problem?"

"what a suck up he is."

"this is why he doesn't have any friends." 

jake grits his teeth and turns away from the sight of the three. when they're out of the school grounds jake withdrew from sunghoon's hold, now standing 6 feet away from sunghoon. they stopped in the area where no one was around to intrude. 

"jake?" sunghoon calls out, confused. "what's wrong?" 

jake hesitates to speak, eyes locked with sunghoon's. "why did you have to say that?" jake begins,  "you know that's gonna cause a problem now? you should've stayed behind and talked to them. they wanted to be friends with you, sunghoon. and...and you just ruined that opportunity. why did you do that?"

whatever jake was expecting, it wasn't what sunghoon just did. sunghoon smiled, tenderly. jake's eyes widen in surprise. 

sunghoon opens his mouth to speak, "it's okay. i knew something like that was gonna happen...i didn't stay behind because they were just jerks. they aren't the right choice of friends that i'd want. the only person that matters to me is you, jake...i only want you." sunghoon says, slowly taking steps closer towards jake. when he's inches away from jake, he stops moving. 

"i love you. i hope you know that."
