You burst out of the school doors and welcomed the sunlight that came to dance on your face. The last day of school was over. Summer had arrived. You decide to sit on the nearby bench before you were tackled by the other eager kids. The breeze blew lightly and cooled you off after being stuck in a stuffy classroom. The birds chirp happily and the smell of freshly mowed grass lingers in the air. You take a deep breath and sigh. You were anticipating this for a long time, and it was finally here. Everything was going to be perfect.
“OH MY GOSH! LOOK AT THIS, OH MY GOSH, LOOK!!!” your friend yelled right in your ear.
“What?” you ask irritated.
“It’s about One Direction!” she exclaimed, pointing to her phone.
“When is it not about One Direction, Marcy?” you ask, rolling your eyes.
“ONE DIRECTION?!” two of your friends suddenly yell from across the school yard.
The girls rush over to Marcy’s side and struggle to look at her phone.
“Listen to this,” Marcy orders. “I’m quoting here. ‘It’s official. The rumors that have been going around for the past few months are true. The British boy band, One Direction, who took the world by storm back in 2011, are officially taking a break from their job. That means no more singing for a while, and no more concerts or special appearances. Sources tell us that they will be moving into their summer house in California for the entire summer. They will be heavily guarded from fans to ensure they will be allowed to rest easy. Don’t worry; they’ll be back in the fall to give more music to their thousands of fans around the world.’”
Suddenly all of the girls scream at once.
“Can you believe it?!” one shouts.
“They’re taking a break?! How can they take a break?” shouts the other.
“Girls, do you know what this means?” Marcy asks. “It means that they’re going to be in California, right?”
“Right…” the girls say in unison.
“It also means that we can go to California, find the boys’ house, and meet them!” Marcy explains.
The girls scream again, causing you to cover your ears.
“But they said they would be heavily guarded from fans,” one says.
“I don’t think the guards know how smart the fans are. Especially us, right girls?”
“Yeah!” they both say.
“What do you say, (Your Name), are you in?” Marcy asks you.
“In other words, do you think you could drive us?” one of your friends say.
“Oh no. Not again. Not again in a million years would I drive you to see One Direction ever again. Remember what happened last time?” you ask them.
Remember what happened last time. How could you forget? It was the best time of your life. You had driven your friends to go see One Direction, and when they stole your car keys, you were the one who saw them. Actually, met them. Kissed a couple of them. Your eyes grow wide and re-realize you haven’t told your friends anything about that. It is the biggest lie you’ve ever kept from them, but it’s for their own good. You know how much they love them, so they would be devastated if they found out you got to hang out with the biggest boy band in the world and they didn’t. You’re not even a fan.
“Oh, come on!” Marcy pleads.
“No! Guys, you’ll get in so much trouble. They won’t ever fall in love with you if you keep chasing them. Plus, there’s a bunch of nice boys at our school. Why can’t you go crazy for one of them instead?” you suggest.
Marcy laughs.
“None of the boys here are as cute as One Direction,” Marcy says.
It’s true and you know it. The boys at your school aren’t as charming, funny, sweet, sensitive, caring—or daring—as One Direction.
“Sorry, I’m not going to drive you. Besides, I really want to just relax this summer,” you explain.
“Okay, fine…” Marcy sighs.
The other girls sigh with her.
“Come on girls, let’s go hang out over there,” Marcy suggests.
In a second they’re gone, and you’re left all alone again. You lean back on the plastic bench you’re sitting on and close your eyes. Suddenly a cold breeze comes through and gives you a chill. The memory comes flooding back to you…you were sitting on a plastic bench like the one you are now, and there was a cold breeze in the air. You were waiting for a bus that would take you far away from the boys whom you left literally fighting over you. Then the boys came all together to apologize. You forgave them, and you exchanged phone numbers.
Suddenly your phone rings out loudly, awaking you from your day dream. You snatch your bag and rummage through it, trying to get to your phone before the attention of the whole school was drawn to you. You finally find it and turn off the ringing. You struggle to see who is calling against the glare. You guess it is impossible and decide to answer it anyway just in case it is important.
“Hello?” you say.
“Ah, hey!” a soft, cheery voice answers.
“Who is this?” you ask.
“Ah, don’t you remember me? It’s me, Louis!”
“Louis?” you ask in disbelief.
“Yeah, it’s me! Oh, and Harry!”
“Harry?”
“Yeah! Say hi, Harry!” Louis says.
“Hi!” you hear Harry say in the background.
“We were afraid you wouldn’t answer!” Louis explains in his accent.
“I almost didn’t! I’m sure glad I did. How are you guys?” you ask.
“Ah, we’re just fine! Zayn’s taking a nap and Niall’s eating, so it’s all good.”
You giggle.
“Boy, I missed that,” Louis says. “So how have you been?”
“I’ve been okay. School was stressful, but it’s over now. I just got out, actually!” you tell him.
“Ah, really? How convenient!”
“What do you mean?” you ask.
“Just ask her already!” you hear Liam yell.
“Ah, I am, Liam!” Louis yells back. “Yeah, so the boys and I are wondering something.”
“Yeah? What is it?” you ask.
“We were wondering…if maybe you’d like…to come to California with us?”
