She stood still, thinking of what she was to do now.
An idea came to her. She would sabotage everything they made her do until they let her go. It didn’t matter where they let her go. Anything was better than be on this cursed ship. She continued up on to the deck, determined to follow through with her plan.
“Damn. Yer slow girlie,” James grumbled as she made her way onto deck. He tossed her a mop and a bucket. “Fill it up and clean the deck. Ya aren’t gonna slack off.”
Ella stumbled as she caught the two items. She grimaced as she went to do as she was told. “What’s the damn point if it’s just going to get covered in sea water again?” she said under her breath in annoyance.
As she made her way back on to deck, she tried to think of a way to mess up cleaning without being obvious she was trying to mess up. She sighed as she put the bucket on the deck and worked on cleaning. She could feel the ship rocking beneath her and the water that sloshed over the sides of the buckets. It was a mess. More so than before. She smiled. She had succeeded by accident.
She continued her work to make the deck look bad while making it look like she had no clue what she was doing. It was great to know that she could defy them so easily. They didn’t even seem to be paying attention to her. All the better…
She grimaced as she heard footsteps behind her. She had to be in trouble now. She hadn’t thought of the consequences… Crap.
“What are ya doing? Yer gonna make captain and James angry,” said the voice from behind her.
She turned slightly to see the boy that had come to her room earlier. She let out a sigh of relief that it was him and not someone else. “Do I look like I care? I would rather them be angry than happy! They kidnapped me,” she snapped angrily.
He snorted. “You don’t realize the position yer in do ya?” he asked, stepping closer to her.
Ella glared up at him. “Maybe I do. But I have a feeling youre going to explain the position I’m in either way,” she said simply.
“Yer right. Yer life is in our hands. So you have no control over anything. Unless it involves drowning yerself,” he said. “Yer to do what James and captain tell ya. Not what you feel like doing. And do it right.”
She snorted. “Apparently, you don’t know me. I’m going to do whatever I damn well please. You can’t have much more power than me anyway. You have to be around the same age as me. So why don’t you follow your own advice and do what youre told,” she said angrily. Ella wasn’t going to put up with someone who was around the same age as her telling her what to do.
He rolled his eyes. “Give up, missy. You have no chance of ever doing anything you want again. So ya might as well try to make the best of what you have. Which isn’t much,” he said. “I have power of a helluva a lot more than you. I’m part of this crew. You on the other hand are still just a hostage.” He turned to go, not caring enough to argue anymore with her.
Ella reached out and grabbed his arm without thinking. “You want to see how much I can do and get away with? Because I swear to god you will,” she said quickly. She would show him. She would show them all. A girl could do whatever they wanted and not be scared of the males who had the guts to call themselves “men.”
