Foul ball: A baseball that is hit outside the field of fair play.
~Sammy~
I would honestly rather shoot myself in the head with a nail gun if it meant I didn't have to hang out with Joey. I'm sure he's nice when you get to know him but having to get to know him means having to hang out. In my eyes, he's a snooty douche bag who is an antisocial piece of shit who's rude to every human being that isn't one of his friends.
But coach wants us to get along...
I let out a frustrating grunt as I throw myself face first onto my bed. I'm conflicted. Coach seems like a nice person that actually cares about the students he teaches. Joey on the other hand, as handsome as he is, gets on my fucking nerves. But if getting along with my co-captain helps me stay on coach's good side and the team, then so be it. Even if I have to hang out with a total ass.
Dragging my feet as I walk to my closet, I chose the least thought about outfit in the world, and that's really saying something for me. Because we all know that it may be hard to find a good outfit to wear with someone you are attracted to but it gets easier when you cand stand to be in the presence of said attractive person. What I picked out was a plain navy sweatshirt, dark grey joggers, and my least favorite pair of high top vans, the perfect outfit to show that I'd rather be in bed.
My phone buzzed on the nightstand, I hesitantly reached for it, unsure if it was my savior, my best friend or my headache of a "date." I turned it over and all the air left my lungs with a sigh of relief seeing Rosie's name flash across the screen.
"Talk to me," I spoke into the phone as I gathered my keys.
"Why the fuck did you not tell me you're going on a fucking date with fucking Joey Reid!" Her ear shattering shriek made the volume 6 on my phone sound like a volume 60. I rub my forehead, feeling an actual headache coming.
"Yes, please give me more hearing loss, and also, must you always talk like you love the taste of soap?" I pinched the bridge on my nose as if that were to turn the world's volume down. Never have I ever wished for the silence of not being able to hear more than right now.
"I'm sorry, I curse when I get flustered like this, I mean, YOURE GOING ON A DATE WITH JOEY REID!!! This is a big thing!"
Jesus, this girl really needs to learn the concept of volume control. She's going to fry my hearing aids.
"Okay, it's not a date, we're just hanging out so we can get along for Coach, that's all it is." I shut my bedroom door as I make my way out of my house, 1000% sure I have everything I need. I even have spare hearing aid batteries and a whole extra pair in case the batteries don't work.
As much as I'd love to not have to hear his ridiculous conversation starters, it'd be rude to blatantly not listen to him. I reach for the front door before the voice of my own personal paralysis demon interrupts me.
"And where do you think you're going young man?" I shoot a glance at my least favorite sibling and deflate at the sight of him in his work uniform, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. In his hand, the keys to our shared car, an exact replica to the ones in my own hand. Well, shit.
One car, two brothers, both needing to leave at the exact same time. He needs it for work, but I can't fathom the idea of having my mother drop me off at a so called "date."
"I have a date," my mouth says before my brain can process what to actually say.
His face does that thing where he give this infuriating "now I know everything" smile. That smile could literally start fires if left unattended. And I mean it in the literal sense that the last time I saw that mischievous smile of his, he accidentally started a garbage fire.
"Ah I see, hot date? Who's the lucky guy that has to go out with your salty ass? A nerd? Some airhead football player? You have to give me some hint! Is he in my grade or yours? Is he-" I swiftly cut him off, not wanting to keep hearing his annoying rant. "It's actually none of your business." Last thing I need today is for my brother to find out my 'hot date' is the co-captain of the baseball team.
"Anyway, I said I'm picking him up and I don't think he'd appreciate a piggy back ride, so I need the car." I jingled my keys as I reach for the doorknob.
"Uh uh uh, hold it loverboy," Juniper walks forward, gripping his keys tighter in his hand. "I'm the one who's actually using it for something important, I don't have the time to take an uber and Mom's not here to give me a ride. So you better think of something because I need the car more than you do."
I let out and exasperated sigh. He had me there, guess I'll just cancel with Joey.
"Alright, you can use the car, go get to work before you're late," was all I could get out while trying to figure out what to message Grumpilocks. Juniper just rolled his eyes and pushed past me out the door.
I stood there until I heard the car start up and pull out before I whipped out my phone to see a couple missed messages from Joey asking where I was and if I could still pick him up.
✨Grumpilocks✨: Hey um.. it's close to 6, are you still picking me up?
✨Grumpilocks✨: If you're backing out now, you have to let me know.
✨Grumpilocks✨: Are you still alive?
There were a couple messages in between but those were the few that stood out to me. Ugh how am I going to break this to him that I have no way of getting to him. I almost want to just say oh well and ignore his messages as I go back to sleep but that'd just be rude.
Me🤪: sorry my brother had to take the car and i don't have any way of getting to you so unless you can pull a car out of your ass...
✨Grumpilocks✨: Oh, damn that sucks, maybe I can get my dad to drive us but no promises. If that doesn't work we can just uber.
Of course, I guess we can just uber, except I don't have the money to just uber whenever I need to.
Me🤪: okay pretty boy, you can take an uber, idc, but im not getting in one of those things
Hopefully he reads this message and decides I'm just an absolute horrible human being and he doesn't want to be around me outside of school hours. Maybe he'll cancel the whole meet up and just force coach to deal with two co-captains who don't like each other.
One can only hope.
✨Grumpilocks✨: Calm down, turns out my dad can't drive us, but I will pay for the uber, I'll pick you up, be ready at 6:30.
Hope is dead to me. Guess there's no escaping this for me. Greeeaaaat.
I shot a quick text to my mom that I was leaving at 6:30 and shouldn't be home until 8, that is, if there are no more delays to the meeting time. After I told her that her dinner is in the microwave, I saw an unfamiliar car pull up in front of my house, a familiar head of blonde hair seated in the backseat.
✨Grumpilocks✨: Your chariot has arrived, get in.
Words cannot express how unexcited I am for this little get-to-know-me hang out that Coach wants us to do. But I guess it's for the greater good of the team. I quickly locked up the house and patted down my pockets just to be triple sure I had all my necessary supplies to ensure I will be hearing the entirety of this "date".
No more delaying it now.
I walked down to the car and Joey opened the door for me.
okay now we're getting somewhere, buckle your seatbelts peoples, shits about blow
later bitches
