Should is a useless word, almost as useless as hope." —Willa
"Are we there yet?"
Taking a deep breath, Lily looked in the rearview mirror. Sitting in the back seat of their rental is her eleven-year-old son, his sandy blonde hair mussed, baby blue eyes droopy as he looked out the window. His Nintendo Switch is in the middle next to him, long forgotten. It was a little after ten at night; they were on the last leg of their long journey, and Colton was getting antsy.
To be fair, she was getting there herself; they had gotten up at three-thirty to head to the airport in Boston. From there, it was a four-hour flight to Dallas, Texas, where they had an unexpected eight-and-a-half-hour layover until they were able to get on another flight to Bozeman, Montana. Where she was able to get a rental, they had been on the road for just under two hours.
As she looked out the window at the blackened sky, she couldn't help but smile. The sky was crystal clear; you could see all the stars and constellations; her grandma used to say living in Montana was like living a little closer to heaven.
"Yes, Colt, we're almost there," she replied, smiling at his exasperated huff.
"Mooooom, you said that hours ago!" he whined before a yawn overtook his body.
Lily smiled, shaking her head as they popped up over the hill, following the long, winding highway. Nestled off in the distance, surrounded by thick, luscious green trees, was the small town of Buckskin, Montana. Home of the Buckskin Warriors, home to just under two thousand five hundred people.
"Look out there," she pointed to the small town, "There it is."
Colton sat up, looking out the window, "That's where you grew up?" he asked, squinting.
The small town of Buckskin was lit up in the distance.
Lily laughed, "Yes, this is where I was born and raised," she replied.
"It's kinda small," he said, straining to look out the window as they got closer. "Doesn't look anything like Boston."
"Nope, this is Montana, baby." She chuckled.
"You think we'll get to see some cowboys?" he asked excitedly.
Lily swallowed hard. "I'm sure we will see some in town," she replied, glancing back at her son.
To say she was nervous was an understatement; Lily had left Buckskin behind eleven years ago, but what she took with her was more than memories.
