You know, when you boil life down, it's funny just how little you need, isn't it? - Rip Wheeler
Breakfast the following day was a hearty affair, much like their late-night dinner the night before. All six of them gathered around the table, indulging in thick buttermilk pancakes smothered with melted butter and sweet maple syrup, crispy bacon sizzling on the side, and a colorful array of fresh strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries."What are your plans today?" Susan asked, taking a bite of a sliced strawberry and glancing at her daughter and grandson. Colton, with his mouth full of pancake, looked up eagerly.
Lily chuckled, "Jamie is taking us into town for ice cream; I'm going to ask Wanda to meet us there. I thought I'd show Colton around town," she said, sipping on orange juice.
James nodded in agreement, "Sounds like a good idea," he said between bites of pancake.
Susan smiled warmly, "That does sound like fun," she commented, enjoying the family moment.
Leaning over to whisper in his sister's ear, Jamie shared, "Grandpa is getting a hospital bed today; they don't want Colt to see it come in."
"I want to get two scoops on a waffle cone!" Colton exclaimed happily, gulping down his milk.
Jamie chuckled, "Where does he put it all?" he asked his sister.
Jim waved his hand dismissively. "You leave my great-grandson alone. He's a growing boy; he needs a lot of fuel," he joked.
Colton jumped up from his seat, eager to get going. "I'm ready to go!" he announced with a wide grin.
But Susan intervened, gently tapping his shoulder. "No, you're not, young man; take care of your plate first."
Colton sighed in resignation, "Yes, Grandma," he mumbled, returning to his seat to finish his breakfast.
In her bedroom, Lily settled onto the edge of her bed, pulling out her phone and tapping her favorites to find Wanda's number. With a soft click, she initiated the call.
