"Why do we scream at each other? This is what it sounds like, when doves cry." Embry sings softly on the window pane, thumbing the next page of the book that she has in her hands. It was just her in the house today, Steve off working at Scoops again, so she had decided to read outside today, at least getting a little vitamin D in while she occupied herself.

"You ever think about learning how to skateboard, Harrington?" A voice from the sidewalk rings out, loud enough for her to hear through her headphones, and she looks up to see Max Mayfield standing in front of her porch.

"How do you know where I live?" she asks, taking off the headphones and stopping the cassette as she closes the book in her hands. "I don't. I just happened to roll by your house and you just happened to be sitting on your porch." Max shrugs and Embry raises her eyebrows.

"Yeah, I totally believe you." she nods, rolling her eyes before starting to pick up her book. "So I take that as a no then, huh?" Max continues to look at the girl as she takes a deep breath.

"those words never came out of my mouth, Mayfield."

"Doesn't mean your eyes didn't say it." she looks up at embry, clutching her skateboard a little closer to her chest. "You don't want to spend time with me, I'm a bore. Where's your boyfriend anyways?"

A part of Max's heart sunk a little bit with that sentence and she shrugged, "Not sure, and he's not my boyfriend anymore. We're just friends now."

If max was being honest with herself, they should have never dated in the first place. They just didn't seem to work past just friends, both her and Lucas knew that now. So it made it that much easier to get caught up in Embry Harrington's smile two days prior at the ice cream parlor. She just couldn't get it out of her head and she didn't know why.

"Oh. I'm sorry, I didn't know." Embry says, empathy prominent in her voice, but Max just shakes her head. "How could you have known. It's not like you talk to any of us anyways."

"Okay, that's not fair and you know that. I don't necessarily talk to anyone other than Steve and that's on a good day so don't take it too personally. You and Lucas seemed cool the other day so I just assumed-" Embry starts to argue but Max cuts her off, not letting off the hook just yet.

"Well you assumed wrong. Like I said, just friends. That's all." the air gets thick around them and Embry can't help but start to click her fingers on the hardcover of her book. "So do you want to learn how to skate or what?"

What's the worst that could happen is what echos through her head before Embry sighs, setting her book to the side, hopping off the windowsill.

"So where do we start?" she asks, gesturing to the skateboard like it's a complete foreign object and a laugh instantaneously slips out of Max's lips. "It's not going to bite you Harrington, just step on it and I'll guide you, okay?"

Embry glances at the girl before hesitantly grabbing her hand and stepping onto the board, butterflies immediately exploding in the pit of her stomach. "Don't worry, I've got you. Now we're just going to wheel a little bit down the road, okay?" Embry nods lightly, trying to not focus on how nice it feels to hold Max's hand and instead at the gravel in front of her but she leans forward a bit too much and the board goes flying down the road.

"fuck!" the word flies out of Embry's mouth before she can stop it as she squeezes her eyes shut, bracing herself for the fall but it never comes. her eyes creep open to see Max over her, her hands holding on tightly to Embry's waist.

"I told you, I've got you Harrington. I'm not going to let you fall." God she's so pretty, the thought floated into Embry's mind so easily. They stay there for a second, just looking at each other before Max senses someone behind them and she pulls Embry up to a standing position and they both lock eyes with Eleven.

"Hi." she says, holding Max's skateboard to her chest and both of the girls eyebrows furrow in confusion as they glance at each other before Max lets out a confused "Hi?" which sounded more of a question than an answer.

"Can we talk?" she maintains eye contact with Max before also looking at Embry, "You can come. You may be help."

From what Embry knew of Eleven, which wasn't too much considering she had only seen her around for about as long as Max, this was most likely about Mike. Anyone with eyes could see that he was her world but at the same time he was a teenage boy and if growing up with Steve had taught her something, it was that teenage boys can be stupid as hell sometimes.

Once they get into Embry's bedroom, Eleven immediately starts rambling on and on about how her adopted father has been on them about being alone in her bedroom and that mike had started to act weird and might be lying to her.

"And then he said he-- he missed me. And then he just hung up."

"He's a peice of shit." Max rolls her eyes before continuing to pace back and forth in front of Embry's bed that both her and eleven were sitting on. "What?"

" Mike doesn't have jack shit to do today, and his Nana obviously isn't sick. I guarantee you, him and Lucas are playing Atari right now." Max emphasizes the last part of then sentence as she stops pacing to look at Eleven.

"But friends don't lie."

"Yeah, well, boyfriends lie. All the time." el's eyes widen as max says the last words and a snort escapes Embry's mouth before she can stop it and she immediately slaps her hand across her mouth, turning crimson.

"Did you just?" Max starts to ask and she nods before looking back at Eleven. "So here's what you're going to do. You're going to stop calling him and you're not going to answer if he calls." Max nods in agreement before adding, "As far as you're concerned, he doesn't exist."

"Doesn't exist?" worries flashes in Eleven's eyes as she leans forward and Max nods, "He treated you like garbage. You're gonna treat him like garbage. Give him a taste of his own medicine."

"Give him the medicine." Eleven repeats and Max nods again, "Mm-hmm. And if he doesn't fix this, if he doesn't explain himself, dump his ass."

"dump his ass." she repeats and both of the other girls nod in agreement.

"You know what, I have the perfect thing to do while we wait. " A look falls over Max's face and all Embry can think is that this girl is up to no good. For her or for Mike.

Without another word the redhead is pulling both Embry and Eleven to the bus stop with only one place in mind. The Starcourt Mall.
