The children were fast asleep as a powerful storm blew over the forest. Zachary and Aurora were the first to hear it. "What's that?" Whispered Aurora. "I'll check it out." Zachary climbed down the ladder and listened. He heard a strike of lightning and a loud BOOM! He quickly looked back at the tree house to make sure Carter and his sister's hadn't woken up. Zachary climbed up the ladder and shut the tree houses door. The treehouse had a few windows 2 in each bedroom and 3 in the main rooms. The windows had latches where a wood block could open and close the window. Zachary was grateful to see that the bedrooms windows were closed. He sat at the table with Aurora. "It's only a storm, we will be okay." Aurora sighed with relief. "We must comfort Carter, Lilith, and Rosalie, they may be scared." Whispered Rosalie. Zachary went back into the boys bedroom and Aurora went to the girls. The children slept straight through the night. When the children the woke up the sky was a bright blue and the smell of pine was in the air. "What's for breakfast?" Asked Carter. "We don't have any food left Carter." Said Lilith. "I don't need any food." Said Zachary. "Today I'm heading to Gold City to find work." " Then us siblings will go exploring, we can go without breakfast!" Said Aurora. Zachary headed off to gold city and the children left the tree house and started off. "Blackberries!" Cried Lilith "they taste good too!" Laughed Carter. "Be care.." Rosalie tried to explain but Carter had already pricked himself. "OW OW OW!" Cried Carter. "I can get those out Carter if you hold still." Said Rosalie trying to calm Carter down. While Rosalie pulled out the thorns Aurora and Lilith picked lots of blackberries enough for a few days! "At least we know we can come back because there's plenty more blackberries from where we came from." "We also know where the eggs are too and maybe other animals!" Mentioned Carter. The children went back to the tree house with full stomachs and a load of blackberries. "Well how are we going to get the blackberries up there?" Pointed Carter. "I have an idea." Said Rosalie in a very shy voice. "Well what is it?" Asked the children. "We tie a rope to a basket we can make by weaving twigs. Then place the blackberries in and I could climb to the top with the rope and pull it up?" Rosalie said. "Why that's a great idea!" Cried Aurora. It only took Rosalie a few minutes to make the basket, Lilith made a basket too because they both were so good at weaving flower head bands. When Zachary got home he could smell the scent of cooked eggs. He was delighted to see the basket full of blackberries sitting on the table. He also saw that each child had one egg to eat in there hand. "How was your guys day?" Asked Zachary. "Great we found blackberries!" Cried Carter. "They taste good too!" Laughed Carter. "Well how was your day Zachary?" Asked Aurora. "I made 5 dollars and I got a loaf of bread from the baker in Gold City for mowing his lawn. I actually worked mostly today in the backyard of a doctor." "A doctor?!" Cried Lilith! "Yes he lives with his wife she is a gardener. The doctor wants me to come back tomorrow to help tend to his wife's garden. Tomorrow I will pick up a special treat." The children finished supper and they headed down to the stream for a night wash and drink. "Isn't this a great night?" Asked Rosalie "It's great! And it's so quiet tonight." Commented Lilith. The children washed up and went to bed. They did not shut their windows.
