Zenitsu walked inside and took his shoes off, hanging his coat up.

"So you missed your train?" Kaigaku asked, leaning on the hallway wall. The house was dark, only a little bit of light coming through the blinds over the window.

Zenitsu nodded slightly, watching the floor. "Next time I'll stay closer to home...."

Kaigaku walked over. "Where all did you go?"

Zenitsu shrugged. "I just kinda wandered around all day. I never really look around anywhere so I did that today." Zenitsu said.

Kaigaku made Zenitsu look at him, glaring into his eyes.

Zenitsu looked off to the side a bit, at the clock. "I-it's kind of late... We should go t-"

"Shut up." Kaigaku snapped.

Zenitsu was silent immediately. He was scared again.

Kaigaku pushed him against the door a bit, holding his neck. "I told you to come home at a certain time."

"I-I missed the train." Zenitsu stuttered, his eyes watering up.

"Excuses excuses." Kaigaku said, squeezing Zenitsu's neck slightly, cutting off a bit of air.

"Kaigaku, I'm sorry!" Zenotsu cried, his voice cracking.

"You keep doing this Zenitsu. This is your fault. I wouldn't have to do this if you would just listen to me." Kaigaku said, tightening his grip.

All Zenitsu could do was cry.

Kaigaku held him until he was about to pass out, then let go, dropping him on the floor. He went to his room. "Go to bed!"

Zenitsu took a moment to get his air back, then quietly walked to his room, shutting and locking his door. He curled up in his bed a bit and felt his neck, trying not to cry again. He failed and just cried, staying quiet about it.

His phone lit up.

Zenitsu sat up a little and wiped his eyes.

'Did you get home alright?' It was Tanjiro.

'Yeah.'

'Thank goodness. Are you alright?'

'He was mad.'

A few moments passed.

'I'm off in a few days. Wanna hang out? Wednesday?'

'Yeah. I don't really wanna stay at home very much.'

'I understand. I'll see you then.'

'See you.' Zenitsu said, plugging his phone in. He got up and walked over to the window, looking out at the other buildings and streets. The lights looked nice. He lived in a bright part of town, usually busy, but it was quiet despite that. He stayed there for a bit, then went to bed.

(A month later)

Zenitsu had hung out with Tanjiro more often now. They got to know each other better and they usually made plans on the days they weren't busy. Tanjiro liked bei g able to make Zenitsu happy, and Zenitsu really liked Tanjiro's company. He was nice and perfect in almost every way.

Zenitsu had opened up more too. He didn't always stare at the ground and he smiled a lot more. Despite all the bruises he had, and the worry that followed him around his home, when he was away from Kaigaku, he was an entirely different person.

"Would you mind trying karaoke out? I know a place we could go to here in town. They've got really good reveiws online." Tanjiro said, showing Zenitsu the place on his phone.

"Yeah, it sounds fun." Zenitsu smiled.

"Great!" Tanjiro smiled, getting up from the bench. He grabbed Zenitsu's hand and pulled him with him a bit, smiling and talking to him about what kind of music he enjoyed.

Zenitsu followed and listened, happy to be able to have another good day. He liked seeing Tanjiro smile. It's all he ever really did do.
