Robin has been your best friend for years and ever since she became friends with Steve, she's been trying to set you both up. She's currently on her break at Scoops, so you're both chatting in the back rooms.
"So Y/N, are you going to tell me what's going on with you and Steve or am I going to have to force it out of you?" Robin grins at you.
Fondly rolling your eyes at her, you shrug. "Honestly Robin, if there was something going on between us, you would be the first to know."
She raises her eyebrows.
"Are you sure there's nothing happening? I have eyes, y'know. I see the way you look at each other."Your eyes widen. "Wait, each other? He looks at me in a certain way too? What? How does he look at me? Robin, elaborate!"
Robin tries to keep her composure but loses it after a few seconds, holding her stomach and rolling around in her seat with laughter.
"Your face!" She manages to get out in between laughs. "You so do like him."She's not wrong.
At first, every single thing about the boy got on your nerves, but over time, you have grown to like him. Those little things that used to annoy you before are now the things you like most about him."Okay fine! Maybe I do like him! I mean how could I not? But that doesn't matter, because there's no way he would ever return those feelings. Ever. Which actually really-" You ramble on, letting your feelings out until Robin holds a hand out to stop you.
"Wha-"
You begin to say but she interrupts you.
"Shh." She lifts a finger up to her lips, gesturing at the door, only making you more confused.Slowly, Robin stands up and tiptoes towards the door.
"Listen!" She whispers.
Straining your ears to listen, you hear it. Two hushed voices arguing back and forth."Move out of the way! It's gone all quiet, I can't hear a thing with your big head in the way." A scuffle is heard behind the door.
"Take that back. My head is not big." You hear a small bang, almost as if someone has been shoved against the door.
"Ouch! Okay fine, I'm sorry. It's not big but it is in the way," the older sounding voice responds in a clipped tone.Without waiting to hear anymore, Robin throws open the door and your worst fear is confirmed. Hanging on to the door is Steve, his eyes darting back and forth between you and Robin. Standing motionless behind him is Dustin, both of them clearly in shock at being caught.
"Well, well, well. What do we have here?" Robin crosses her arms, a smirk upon her face.
Steve looks away from her, almost ashamed, his gaze lands on you before quickly looking away, a small blush forming on his cheeks.
"Are you blushing?" Robin continues, enjoying seeing Steve in this predicament."It was his idea!" Dustin burst out. He looks over at you with guilty eyes. "I didn't want to eavesdrop, Harrington made me do it." He points at Steve and shoves him into the room, before bolting it back up the corridor.
"Henderson, you little shit!" Steve yells after him before turning around and awkwardly smiling at you both.Dusting pretend dust off his shorts, he clears his throat. "So, erm, what you guys talking about?"
"Give it up Steve, we know you were listening, don't we Y/N?" Robin turns to you, her eyebrows raised expectantly.
"Um, y-yeah," is all you manage to say. All you feel is complete embarrassment and worry thinking about what Steve could've heard.A few moments of silence pass, the three of you all exchanging glances - you looking uncomfortable, Steve looking sheepish and Robin looking amused.
"Well, this is totally not awkward! I'm going to leave you two to it and go see how traumatised poor Dustin is." Robin teasingly nudges past Steve, giving you two thumbs up and a big smile once she's behind his back. "Good luck," she mouthes, before turning on her heel and jogging away.
Avoiding eye contact with Steve, you look at the floor, shuffling your feet a little. You hear him clear his throat once more.
"Y-Y/N?" He stutters slightly. "Um, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have listened in, it was a stupid idea. I just heard my name and was intrigued, that's all. But I shouldn't have eavesdropped anyway. So I really am sorry."
You look up and see concern clouding his expression. "It's okay." You shrug. "Out of interest, um, what exactly did you hear?"Your heartbeat increases as you await his answer.
"I may have heard something about you, um," Steve sheepishly rubs his hand along the back of his neck, "...liking me?" He finishes, throwing you a lopsided smile.
"Oh." You try to smile back, but it looks more like a grimace."You're wrong, by the way." He runs a hand through his hair. If you didn't know better, you'd think he was nervous.
"Huh?" You ask, confused.
"You're wrong."
"I'm not following, Steve. What do you mean? Wrong about what?" You question, scrunching your eyebrows in confusion.
Chuckling, he puts his hands in his pockets and shrugs, rocking on his heels. "You said I would never return your feelings. You were wrong."It feels like your heart almost stops.
"What are you trying to say?" You try to stay calm but you think Steve sees through your calm façade because he smirks before replying."I like you too Y/N. That's what I'm trying to say."
