Stifling a yawn, you flick the page of your book over, the words blurring together. You'd love to be in bed right now but, unfortunately, you have to wait to let your brother Dustin in. He's been out all night with his friends and Steve promised he'd drop him off.
Steve. The one that got away.
A few months ago, over the summer, you were hanging out with Steve a lot. Both of you even confessed your feelings for one another but you never made it official. Then, when school came back around, you drifted, each of you busy with work and hanging out with your separate friend groups. Sometimes you think about what could've been between you, but it hurts thinking about how neither of you fought hard enough to keep it going.A quiet knock lifts you from your thoughts. As silently as possible, as not to wake your mother, you walk over and open the door. "Hey Dusty, did you have a fun night?"
He smiles and gently pushes past you into the house. "Yep! It was great! Goodnight Y/N/N!"
"Goodnight?" you respond, it sounding more like a question. You didn't expect him to go to bed this soon.Just as you're about to shut the door, you look up and see Steve's car parked opposite. It's like the air gets knocked out of you as you see him. He has one hand on the steering wheel and is ducking down slightly so he can see out the window. A small half-smile is upon his face as his eyes search yours. You've missed the way he looks at you, the look that makes you feel like the most important person in the world to him.
Before you can stop yourself, you're walking towards his car. "Hi Steve." You stand by the passenger side window, arms crossed to try and keep out the cold.
"Oh. Um. Hi Y/N." He sounds surprised that you've come to speak to him. "How have you been?"
"Okay, I guess. What about you?"
"Yeah. Same old. Same old." He smiles, nodding.A few moments of silence pass, as you both smile at each other, neither one sure what to say next.
"Listen-"
"Steve-"
You both laugh at your synchronicity."You go first Steve," you smile at him.
"I just wanted to say that I don't really know what happened between us when we went back to school but," he takes a deep breath, "I still care about you. Like, a lot. And I miss you. So, um yeah. That's it." He runs a hand through his hair.
Your stomach flips when hearing him say he misses you. As much as you've been trying to suppress it, you know you've been missing him too.
"Thank you. I appreciate it." You smile. "Oh... and I guess I miss you too. Just a little bit." You make a tiny gap in between your thumb and your finger, representing the 'little bit'.Shaking his head at you, he begins to laugh. You've always felt like Steve's laugh is infectious, so soon you're laughing too.
After a while, you take a deep breath and point behind you towards your house. "I should probably head back inside. It's late enough already."
He nods. "Yeah, of course. It's been nice to see you Y/N."
"You too, Steve." You smile once again, turning, as you begin to walk back up your path. Before you can get very far, Steve's voice calls out to you. "Y/N! Wait!"
You've never turned around faster in your life. "Yeah?" You call back, a hopeful tone in your voice.
"Are you free tomorrow night?" His voice is full of hope too.
You beam. "Yes. Yes I am. You can pick me up at 7." You wink before turning back once more.
"Yeah! 7 is great!" Steve shouts after your retreating back, his voice obviously pleased. When you reach your front door, you can't resist a look back. As you had anticipated, your gaze locks with Steve's as you exchange a final smile, before he drives off into the night. You close the door behind you, stepping into the comfort of your home.
You guess staying up late has its benefits from time to time.
