You could cut the tension in the room with a knife.
Dustin needed help studying for his Latin test, so you agreed to help him. But, as soon as you arrived at his house, he begged you to bring him to Scoops Ahoy because he seemed to think he would concentrate better after having some ice cream. How could you ever say no to Dustin?
So here you are now. Sitting in the back room with Dustin and your boyfriend Steve who you unfortunately had an argument with just the night before - hence the tension. It's safe to say Steve was not very pleased when you walked in. He hasn't said a single word to you.
To fill the awkward silence, Dustin was trying to make conversation with the two of you but it was only semi-successful as only you were responding. At this point, you don't even know why Steve doesn't just go elsewhere for his break.
"So... what's everyone's favourite flavour out of the new stock?" Dustin asks, spooning a mouthful of bubblegum into his smiling mouth.
"Banana," you say, trying to make an effort.
You hear a scoff from opposite you, causing you to glare at the source of the noise.Noticing your glare at Steve, Dustin stands up and begins to pace the room to distract you, talking about the pros and cons of each of the new flavours. You try to pay attention but the ferocity of Steve's gaze burns into you. Turning to look at him, you see him spinning his hat around his hand with one foot on another chair so his knee is raised. Upon noticing your looking, he pushes his tongue against the front of his mouth, rolling his eyes.
"Steve, what is your problem?" you finally snap. The squeak of Dustin's shoes stops as he stops his speech about ice cream.
"You're a liar, that's all." Steve shrugs.
"What?"
"You said your favourite new flavour is banana but nobody likes banana, so you're lying." He lifts his eyebrows, challenging you to disagree.
"Well, maybe you're controlling." You tilt your head to the side, throwing him a fake smile.
"Huh?"
"Just because you don't like banana, doesn't mean you can tell me that I don't."Steve scowls at you, throwing his hat on to the table. You roll your eyes at how pathetic he's being.
"Err, I might be reaching here but um, something tells me you're not talking about banana ice cream here?" Dustin breaks the silence.
You look at Steve expectantly, but he doesn't say anything.
"Steve," you say with gritted teeth, "is annoyed that I'm friends with Nancy and he's still so butt-hurt over her breaking his heart that he thinks she's trying to feed me shit about him so that I'll break up with him. Isn't that right Steve?"He's silent whilst he calculates his response. "Yes, that is mostly right because I'm not wrong, am I? It's all true. That's why you're lying, because you're annoyed that I figured it out."
You laugh. "Seriously, Steve? You're acting like a child. There is no secret agenda here. Nancy is just my friend. She's not feeding me shit about you at all. And for the record, I'm only annoyed because you're trying to control who I'm friends with."
"Well, sorry I don't like the fact my girlfriend is all friendly with my ex."Another bout of silence passes whilst you shake your head, looking away from Steve.
Dustin clears his throat. "Um. Maybe I should leave you two to it." He begins to back away towards the door.
"No." Both you and Steve snap.
"Okay..." Dustin awkwardly shuffles back to his chair, positioned in the middle of the table, Steve at one end, you at the other. You don't know how much time passes with the only sound being Dustin scooping his ice cream out of his cup before the door bursts open.
"Hey everyone! Steve, your break- um why is it so tense in here?" Robin laughs.
The sight of your best friend makes you tear up, you wish you could catch her up on everything. Robin's face falls when she notices your eyes welling up. "Y/N/N what's wrong?"
Steve's eyes snap in your direction, his eyebrows furrowing.Robin whacks him on the shoulder. "What have you done!" she exclaims, before coming over and hugging you.
"Nothing, I've done nothing!" Steve holds his hands up in protest. Through your tears, you glare at him once again. He sighs. "Okay. Fine. I've been a bit of a dick."
"Yeah, no shit." Robin, rubs your back comfortingly. Then she steps back from you and crosses her arms. "Well, what are you going to do about it then, Steve?"Steve begins to walk over to you, a sheepish, yet apologetic smile on his face. "I'm really sorry Y/N." He envelops you in a warm hug and you bury your head into his chest. "I just don't want to lose you."
"It's okay," you sniff. "But you should know that you won't lose me Steve, especially not because of Nancy. I'm sorry that you ever felt that you could lose me."
"No. Don't apologise," his fingers loop under your chin, bringing your face up to look at him. "I was being stupid. I should've trusted you. I do trust you, I promise." He wipes a tear away from your eye."Aw! Isn't this better?" Dustin claps his hands together. Everyone looks at him and starts to laugh. "What?" he joins in with the laughter. "It's true!"
