Recap : "Kallan O'Sullivan your future father in law"
~Mara Clemente~
No.
No, no, no, no this cannot be happening.
I can't breathe, it's like my lungs and brain completely gave out on their functions, like my whole body is terrorized by the shock of what I think I just heard. I'm not even sure it happened. It couldn't have."Kallan O'Sullivan your future father-in-law" he had said. 7 words. 7 words were all it took to seal my fate. I take turns repeating each and every one of them again still I'm struck by my reality.
Kallan.
O'Sullivan.
Your.
Future.
Father.
In.
Law.
Can't be true. It has to not be true. There must be some kind of mistake I just don't understand it. Why me? Why now? What changed? Why does he need this? So many questions yet there are no answers to be found. But now that I've given it a thought, I don't even understand why I would even be surprised by such a thing, it was never uncommon for a marriage to be arranged for the convenience of two parties (my mother and father's for example) and so many others.
And now that I think about it even more, it makes so much sense more than I would like it to. It's really simple honestly, my father and Kallan both needed help with all the trouble the Russians have been causing lately, and what better-twisted way to make a statement to their opponents than an alliance between two sworn enemies, who may I add have been that way for decades.
Not only would said alliance be a great general help to the situation of both parties, but it would also scare their opponent because they will not understand it. And after all, everyone fears what they cannot understand.
My whole body is trembling, quaking with panic. Because there is no out. How would there be? Unless...
Unless they didn't want it anymore.
Suddenly, my muscles relax, my mind clears and my chin lifts back up looking all of them in the eye. I scan the room the see the other's reactions if they knew of this or not and to my surprise, it seems that no one but Kallan and dear father knew of their little bargain as everyone else's expressions were merely blank, their skin white with pure shock. Even Declan himself, which I assume is the son he was referring to seems taken aback but manages to keep a generally cool and collected expression. One that anyone else would not question for a second but I did. I noticed how his eyebrows had furrowed just in the slightest, barely noticeable. How his jaw was clenched tight or how his shoulders were tense or how his pupils has widened oh so slightly. Again, barely noticeable to anyone else. But not me.
