As Harlow got older she learned how to better take care of herself. She still went to school, her parents not knowing any other option, and she used the excuse to ask as many questions as possible. The library was where she spent her free time during school, when she could, reading all she could. The computers were used for more research, and once she turned sixteen, to look for jobs. While her parents thought she was at the library when not at home or school, she was actually working as many hours as she could to save up money. She knew that as soon as she turned eighteen, no matter if they knew she had somewhere to go, her parents would kick her out.

When her wings first came in she was given an ultimatum, find a way to hide them, or not go to school. At first she bound them to her back with a belt, but it was painful and injured her wings, so she found a different way. With time she was able to learn to fold them away, the only thing visible was a tattoo of her wings, covering her entire back.

Throughout the years she was alone. Her brother, Anthony Blake, tried the first couple years. Eventually, the sneaking around was noticed by their parents, and Anthony was sent away to a boarding school. When he came back after a couple of years, right as Harlow began high school, he looked at her with the same disgust that their parents did.

The years following his return made Harlow's life even more difficult. Now that Eden and Lincoln had the child they wanted, whenever Harlow was around, they would praise Anthony for his
soul-mark and mention how their perfect son would get a perfect soulmate. Harlow learned not to be alone with her parents after they started telling her that she didn't deserve a soulmate, and when she wasn't getting upset about that, they would tell her that her soulmate would be an abomination just like her. Although she was used to this scorn and abuse, she knew that her soulmate couldn't be anything but perfect.

The main reason that she didn't get affected by the insults, was because as she grew and got taller and bigger, so did her wings. The comfort that the wings provided Harlow made her feel like she was never alone.

Eventually the money that she had been saving up, for as long as she was given it, was enough so she could move away and start college once she would graduate high school.

Then she no longer needed to rely on just her money, disaster struck.

Lincoln Blake made a vampire angry, so the vampire waited until he, his wife, and his precious son left the house together, and killed all of them. He thought that he had ended the Blake line, that he had killed them all, but as she was hidden away he didn't know about Harlow.

Harlow's family was dead. Exactly twelve years after she first lost them, she lost them again. On her eighteenth birthday, she inherited her family's fortune, and could now get away from the nightmares and memories. She could leave, and go wherever she wanted. Harlow no longer had to sneak away to study the grimoires and practice her magic. She was finally free.

Once she collected the inheritance and packed away her house, she got the transfer papers sorted so she could go to school wherever she ended up. Harlow threw a dart at a map and decided to move to Mystic Falls.
