"SWEETIE, THERE'S SOMEONE ON THE PHONE FOR YOU!"

you peeked over the top of your book and groaned, reluctantly placing it on the couch as you dragged yourself toward your mother. she was standing in the kitchen, watching the cooking bacon with rollers in her hair. covering the speaker on the phone, your mother grinned.

"it's a boy! did you see billy yesterday? maybe it's him!"

you ignored your mom's comment and waved her off as you put the phone to your ear.

"y/n speaking, what's up."

"y/n! hi. it's me, steve. how are you? i found your number in the phonebook."

you quirked an eyebrow at your mom, who was anxiously anticipating your words with an excited smile. she had known about your feelings for billy, and you knew she was secretly rooting for the two of you.

"uh, i'm okay. i was reading just now. look, did you want something?"

you heard him take a deep breath, and you could've sworn you heard some other voices in the background.

"i was wondering, well... i was wondering if you wanted to go get some coffee , or something. it doesn't have to be now, it can be any time. just us."

you weren't surprised by him asking you out, but more that he sounded nervous. from what dustin, will and max had told you yesterday, steve was a total ladies man, and rarely lost confidence.

"sure. mom, what time is it?" you asked, giving her a small smile. you knew she thought it was billy, but it didn't really matter to you. she mouthed 11:30.

"can we go at 12? that's in a half hour."

you heard loud whispers, but ignored it, realizing it was probably just dustin cheering him on. the nerdy kid had seemed pretty adamant about insisting you and steve were perfect for each other.

"yeah! yeah, that's perfect. i'll pick you up then. and, uh, i already have your address from the phone book. see you soon. bye."

you laughed softly at steve's rambling, and shook your head. "g'bye, steve."

once you hung up the phone, you turned to your mom to see shock painted haphazardly all over her face. you just laughed harder at her surprise, and watched as it transformed into a frown. had your mother really been hoping it was billy that badly?

"who's steve? and what about billy?" she asked, sounding quite defeated. you took a piece of already cooked bacon o! of the paper towel beside you, chewing on the crunchy snack.

"steve's max's babysitter. he's really nice, mom, you'd like him. and he's cute. really cute," you gushed, slipping into a seat at the dining table. your mom turned o! the burner and transferred the meat to the plate, sitting across from you.

"okay. but what about billy?" she asked yet again, quite impatiently. you debated whether or not to tell her the truth before settling on just being vague.

"billy doesn't wanna talk to me. he's di!erent. but max and i reconnected, so that's nice." your mom furrowed her eyebrows as you got up to begin getting ready for your date. could you even call it that?

"different how?" she called after you.

"different, mom. he's just different."

you wrapped your oversized biege jacket around you as the wind blew gently, making the edges of your mustard romper fly up a bit. you'd settled on a pretty casual outfit; black converse, and your usual "going out" ensemble.
