"Maitlyn you're gonna be late! Hurry up!" Karen yells out to her daughter from the lower floor.

Maitlyn on the other hand is scrambling to finish brushing her teeth and hauling on the ridiculous work uniform. It was her first day at ice cream shop in the new mall and let's just say she's nowhere near excited.

Since she graduated last year, she's been fired from four different jobs. One for cursing out a customer... or maybe it was two. Another for almost burning down the entire kitchen area, and another for getting caught making out with some dude in the employees only room.

She hated watching her twin sister Nancy get the summer job of her dreams with her boyfriend while she was gonna be stuck serving eight year olds ice cream for the next few months.

She quickly grabs her purse and runs down the stairs to where her mother was waiting for her.

"Sorry," she apologizes to the disappointed look that Karen was giving her.

"See ya Holls," Maitlyn waves to her little sister, quickly pulling on her white Converse and following her mom to the car.

"Please try to not get fired from this one," Karen says before Maitlyn gets out of the car.

"No promises," she jokes, only to receive a look of disapproval. "I won't get fired again mom. Promise."

She holds up a pinky. Karen just smiles and shakes her head. "Have a good first day hun."

"Now that I actually can't promise," Maitlyn says before opening the car door and stepping out.

She makes her way into the mall, looking everywhere for a "Scoops Ahoy" sign but is unsuccessful in finding one.

She walks up to the nearest security guard, figuring he would probably know.

"Excuse me?" she asks, gaining the attention of the man. "Do you know where I can find Scoops Ahoy? The ice cream place?"

"Yup. You're gonna keep walking straight that way," he says, raising a finger in the direction. "Should be on your right hand side."

"Thanks so much," she says before turning on her heels and making her way towards where the man told her to.

Soon enough, she came across the place.

She hesitantly walked in. No one was at the counter so she wondered if she should just walk into the back or wait for someone to come.

Her wondering was cut short when some guy walked in behind her.

Another worker clearly. He was wearing the same hideous outfit and hat. It was only a matter of time before Maitlyn recognized him as the one and only Steve Harrington. Her sister dated him a few years back. Plus he was like one of the most popular people in school so of course she was bound to know him.

"Oh hi!" he says. "Are you the new wor- wait! You're Nancy's sister! Maitlyn!"

"Steve," she greets. God this is gonna suck.

"Well come on in," he says, leading her to the back area. "Robin should be here any minute, she's practically always late. But I can give you a little tour in the mean time."

She follows behind Steve as he leads her to the other side of the counter.

"So how long have you been working here?" Maitlyn asks, trying to make small talk to keep the awkwardness at the lowest level possible.

"Uh few weeks? Maybe four at most?"

"Cool."

Steve showed her everything she needed to know and where it was. Didn't seem too bad. Not like scooping ice cream was all that hard.

By the time he was finished his very unnecessarily long explanations about stuff, another girl came rushing in. Same outfit, hat.

Maitlyn recognized the girl from school. Robin Buckley. They were both in band and had a few classes together. They weren't friends or anything though.

"Hi! Sorry I'm la- oh my god Maitlyn Wheeler? You're the new worker?" There was a grin present on her face.

"Yeah," Maitlyn replies awkwardly. "Robin, right?"

"Yeah. You know my name?"

"You were in band," Maitlyn replies. "Me too."

Robin smiles again. She looks as if she was going to say something else but was interrupted by Steve.

"Great well I'm glad you guys are making friends but we have ice cream to fling. Chop chop!" he says, throwing an ice cream scoop at Robin.

"There aren't even any customers yet, Dingus," Robin replies but joins the other two behind the counter anyways.

The three of them spent the next few hours serving customers and making random small talk.

Four familiar faces rush their way into Scoops soon enough.

Maitlyn's little brother Mike and his friends.

He rings the bell repeatedly, completely ignoring Robin who was standing right in front of him. He lifts up his other hand and waves to Maitlyn, still not stopping with the ringing.

"Hey Dingus your children are here," Robin calls to Steve who just went into the back for his break.

"Again, seriously?"

"Since when are you and my brother all buddy buddy?" Maitlyn asks only to be ignored.

Mike and the other three follow Steve to the back and to a doorway. "I swear if anybody hears about this-"

"We're dead," the four say in unison.

"Where are they going?" Maitlyn asks Robin.

"Movies. Steve sneaks them in all the time."

"Sneaking into movies? God that is so Mike."

Robin just smiles as a reply before seeing to the little boy that was waiting for his order to be taken.

Minutes upon Steve's return, the lights all unexpectedly shut off as if there was a power outage.

"What the hell?" Maitlyn asks, looking around. The last she checked there wasn't supposed to be a storm or anything. It seemed pretty calm outside earlier that day.

"That's weird," Steve says. He walks over to the light switch flicking it on and off a few times.

"That isn't gonna work, Dingus," Robin says.

"Oh, really?" he gives her a look as if to say 'watch me' and begins flicking the switch faster.

Maitlyn rolls her eyes and turns back to the book she was reading. It was nothing really that interesting, just some random adventure story that she picked up at the library.

"Sorry about that," Robin says, handing the young boy his ice cream cone.

Steve continues repeatedly flipping the light switch for about a minute before the power comes back.

"Let there be light," he says proudly before walking away from the switch and over to the counter.
