The events that followed the next evening are murky, but several eyewitness testimonies were written, as stated above, regarding the events of December 25th, 1885 in Cookham Parish. Father Bennett, along with two friends, began taking down the cross and breaking the concrete slab that covers the alleged gravesite. As they dug further underground, several strange arcane symbols became visible, carved into the concrete deeper beneath the earth.
At some point, the ground around the gravesite actually gave way to an extremely large, deep, and foul-smelling sinkhole, the depth of which could not be determined by the naked eye. One of the friends, Nathaniel Smith, actually fell into this well, along with the cross, grave, and all. It was stated by one local that, "His scream faded into nothingness, as if he never hit the bottom." A written statement from Pastor Bennett read, "After Nathan fell into the bottomless hole, piercing screams that seemed to come from the depths of hell enveloped us all for a good minute. It was as if the incessant shrieks were coming OUT of the hole, past us into the living world! And the sheer amount of sweltering heat emanating from the blackened void was simply unimaginable."
The townsfolk eventually covered the hole with another large concrete slab, and the Archbishop of Canterbury was said to have made a special trip out to exorcise, then consecrate the wicked spot. No other mention of the Bennett family was ever discovered, and their whereabouts since the event are unknown.
