I sat on the old, wooden bench outside of Rosemeadow park with Zander, one hand holding a cup of Boba tea, and the other overlapping Zander's free hand.
"It's pretty..isn't it?" He said, as I turn my head to face him.
"Yeah..it reminds me of.." At that moment, I couldn't say anything.
"You okay?" He asks me, placing down his Boba.
"It reminds me of..." I felt tears forming in my eyes, and Zander realized what I was remembering.
"Oh, I'm sorry Luke..I didn't mean to remind you of..that."
I wipe my eyes, and sigh, "I'm fine, don't worry."
He nods, but squeezed my hand tighter for a second, "Do you want to talk about it? I don't mind listening.."
"No, I'm fine, I swear."
"I'll take your word for it."
I force a smile, "Do you want to go make leaf piles? Just like last year?"
"I was just about to ask you." He says, smiling back.
"Let's-" I get cut off by Zander's phone buzzing.
"Aww.., It's Hailey, she said I need to go home." He whines.
"Aww, we can do this tomorrow then, alright?"
"Okay." He perks up a little.
We throw away the empty plastic Boba tea cups, and walk down the tiny hiking trail we took from Zander's neighborhood, just like when we were children.
"Today was fun Luke, thank you."
I smile, "Anytime. I love you, Zander."
"Love you, too." He gives me a quick kiss on the cheek and runs inside.
I stopped waving and removed the plastered smile from my face as I walked home. I walked inside and locked the door, mom cooking dinner. I ran to my room and sat on my bed, then began to sob.
...
"Hi Zander!" Hailey greeted me, Jake sitting on the barstool.
"Hi Hailey. Hi- WHAT IS HE DOING HERE?!"
"Calm down! He's waiting for his mom to come pick him up, she's stuck in traffic."
"Fine. Hi, I guess.."
He waves a little and I grab a plate from the dishwasher.
"What's for dinner?" I ask her.
"Pi-" I cut him off, "I asked Hailey , not you."
"We're having Pizza, Zander. God you're stubborn."
"I am not !"
The two both giggled as I crossed my arms.
"Where's Bethy?" I bring up the topic that I hadn't seen my little sister Bethany since I left that morning.
"Sleeping, she was really excited when I came over, poor thing wore herself out." Jake answered.
"How was the date?" Hailey piped up.
"Oh-oh-" I began to blush "Fun, we went to the mall and got some Boba after, we also went to the hill behind the hiking trail."
"Aww- I didn't know you two still remembered that place!"
"How couldn't we? It's where I got Luke to climb his first tree."
"Hiking..Trail?" Jake said.
"Mhm! There's a hiking trail right in the forest behind Sadie's house! We used to go back there as kids during the weekends!" Hailey beamed.
"Yeah..it was fun..."
"For the most part."
