"Are you done staring, Julia? If you take a picture it'll last longer." His friends laugh, but all I can do is just stare. I bet I look like Adam right now.

"Um, what?" I say hesitantly. I'm such an idiot.

He laughs, but I don't know if it's directed at me or himself. Adam whispers something to the guy, but I'm not close enough to hear.

'What's your name?" I ask, trying to make this less awkward.

"Eddie Munson. Leader of Hellfire." he says, way too confidently.

"Oh. What's Hellfire?"

Eddie laughs again. "Apparently it's a satanic cult, according to all of the idiots at this school who hate fun."

He looks at me again with those eyes. I stop breathing.

"But really, it's a club where we play DnD." He continues.

"DnD?"

"Dungeons and Dragons. It's a fantasy game" He's looking at me like I'm stupid. "It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it."

"..What? I'm not planning on playing DnD anytime soon," I say, sort of defensively.

"Oh! Well I thought you wanted a place to sit. That's really too bad." He's smirking. I can't win.

"...I'm not following"

"If you want to sit here, then you would have to substitute Sinclair at the campaign. He's off playing his stupid 'balls In laundry baskets' game with the jocks." He hasn't broken eye contact the entire time, despite the other boys trying to grab his attention. It feels like my skin is on fire.

"I'm good on that, thanks. I think I would rather slam my head into a locker repeatedly than play a game I know nothing about with people I know nothing about." Now I'm the one trying to be confident.

He looks me up and down, while the other boys are obviously starting to panic. Maybe I can win. Adam leans over to whisper something again but Eddie brushes him off. He takes in a breath and then stands up and starts to walk over towards me. I stop breathing, again.

I can see his entire outfit now. Hellfire shirt with a leather/denim jacket over it, and black jeans with a hole in the knee and a black handkerchief in the back pocket. He stands about 1 foot in front of me.

He studies me for a few seconds before speaking. "Fine. Sit with us. But only for today, or else you'll have to start joining our games."

"Um.. actually I think I'm good. Eating lunch in the bathroom sounds just a little bit less hellish than this." I turn and walk out of the cafeteria, feeling Eddie's eyes on me until I'm out of sight. What the fuck was that.

----

After 3 more hours of weird stares and trying not to fall asleep in class, the bell finally rings. School's over. As I'm walking to my car, an old beaten up Ford Escort, I see Chrissy in the parking lot.

"Hey Julia! How was your first day?" She asks, eyes lighting up when she sees me.

"It was... something. Speaking of which, do you know anything about Eddie Munson?"

"Um.. not really? I know that he failed his senior year the first two times.. and him and Jason get into little arguments sometimes, but I haven't heard anything else about him. Why?"

"At lunch today he was talking to me about some weird club? Hellfire, I think. Then he tried to get me to play some game with him and the other guys." I say, trying to get something else out of her. I can tell there's something else.

"Oh! Yeah, Jason thinks he's like a satanist or something, but I think he seems nice." she hesitates. "Anyways I've got to get going, but have a good day!! I'll see you tomorrow."

I say goodbye and then get into my car, when I see him walking out of the school. We make eye contact and he stops walking, then begins to walk towards my car. He taps on my window and I roll it down, still not breaking eye contact. He leans over my window, his arm resting on the roof of my car.

"That was kind of rude, Julia. You didn't even say goodbye." He's smirking again.

"What do you want, Eddie?" I need to get away from here as fast as possible.

"I just want to have a conversation with you." I swear he looked at my lips for .2 seconds.

"About what? I barely know you."

"About why you keep staring at me." He can't be serious.

"I do not keep staring at you." I scoff, still looking up at him. "You seriously need to get your ego in check."

"Whatever you say." He stands up straight and walks away, but I can tell he's trying not to look back. I start my car and drive home, a little in shock.

When I walk through the front door, my dad is standing in the living room.

"How was your day Jules?"

"Horrible." I walk to my room before he can say anything else, and then sit on my bed. I scream into a pillow. I'm never going to school again.
