Claire had tried her absolute hardest to reject Steve's offer but he would not take no for an answer. After going back and forth for most of the whole day she finally gave in. She had officially been staying in his guest room for three days and they both agreed that they no longer could hide from school. People were starting to get suspicious, Nancy especially who had been blowing up the Harringtons house phone for three days. Claire wasn't quite sure why Steve was avoiding Nancy like the plague but decided it definitely was not her place.

Steve decided it was time to get the girl some clothes she could actually wear in public. It would look a thousand times worse if the poor girl showed up to school wearing his old basketball shorts and a shirt that looked like a dress. She refused at first to let him buy her some clothes and even offered to sneak into her home and steal some of her belongings but Steve refused. As long as he could help it he was keeping her at least 100 yards away from that place.

So that's how he found himself in the most popular apparel store in all of Hawkins searching through all the girl clothes embarrassed. His fellow classmates whispered and giggled as they passed by him making him flush.

With at least a full weeks worth of outfits in hand Steve headed toward the register. He hoped they actually matched and he didn't just get the most ridiculous things on the rack. He had never shopped for a girl before. This was out of his ballpark

While waiting in the massive line he saw the one person he had been trying to avoid. "Shit" he whispered trying to hide his face behind the clothes dropping them all over the floor. "Shit shit shit"

"Steve?" Nancy called out approaching him looking a mixture of confused and angry. "What are you doing here? You haven't been to school in days! You haven't answered the phone! I thought something happened to you!" She exclaimed hugging onto him.

"I-I'm sorry Nance I've just been really busy. There's a lot going on right now" he excused, adjust the clothes onto one arm trying to avoid dropping everything once more.

That's when Nancy's attention was drawn to the clothing. He definitely wasn't shopping for his mother. She wouldn't be caught dead in anything that wasn't designer. "Who are those for?" She asked curiously. "I already have that top silly"

He cringed not knowing how he would get out of this hole he just continued to be digging. "They're um, for a friend. I'm trying to help her out" he said telling the half truth. If Nancy had know there was another girl staying in his house when he himself refused to even let her sleep over she would lose her shit.

"Oh" she said sounding disappointed. Quickly though that disappointment turned into pure rage. "You know what Steve? I really thought you were better than this. After all we went through last year" she spat. "I-I can't believe I thought you'd trust me! You're just so unpredictable. I can't do this anymore" the brunette breathed storming off.

"Nancy! Please!" He yelled after her causing a few customers to snap at him for being obnoxious. With a sigh he moved up in line to the register. As he thought about the fact he was just dumped Steve grew confused. He couldn't find himself being heartbroken by losing Nancy like he should have been. He felt... relived.
