the cafe seemed to have gone silent at your two words as you kept your eyes focused on your cup. your handler sits up straighter and clears her throat, "ares, i don't think you understand." she says to you, causing you to look up at her. "understand what?" you asked, refusing to look over to the man who sat next to you. "if this mission doesn't go well, i don't think this little city you love so much will even be here anymore." slyvia tells you quietly as you stirred your coffee idly. her words cause your stomach to drop, feeling a heavy weight placed on your shoulders. you really didn't want to work with the man next to you. "find someone else for the operation." you tell her, seeing the blonde shift in his spot beside you. your handler opens her mouth to speak before twilight speaks up. "sherwood, let me speak to her." he says- causing her to nod. the blonde then stands from the booth and waits for you to stand up as well. you looked over to him plainly, trying your best to hide your distaste for the oncoming conversation.
leading you out of the cafe, you two stand right outside. crossing your arms, you look up at the man, one of your hands going up to fumble with the gold chain resting against your neck. "what?" you asked him, seeing him mirror your stance with his arms folded over his chest. "[name], please." he says, saying your name. there's a lump in your throat as you fight off tears forming in your eyes. he said your name. your real name. "find someone else to work with you." you tell him, looking straight forward at the buttons on his shirt. twilight let out a sigh, moving his hand to use his thumb and index finger to lift your chin. you glared at him, taking a deep breath at the sudden contact. "you haven't changed much, have you?" he says, looking into your eyes. being so close to him, you could smell his cologne and count the number of light freckles he had on his face. you could feel his warmth beneath the spring sun and most importantly, you could feel him. "work with me again. won't you? just like before?" he asks you gently. you swore his voice never sounded so heavenly. you take a step back, shaking your head as you wipe your eyes with your sleeve. "but it's not just like before, isn't it?" you scoffed as you did your best to hide your tears. "i refuse. find another woman to take my spot." you told him sternly after taking a deep breath. "we're low on agents, you of all people would know." he replies to you, causing you to let out a dry laugh. "i don't care. you're capable of finding a woman to play your wife, aren't you?" you said to him bitterly, the word 'wife' spitting out of your mouth like venom. twilight shakes his head, letting out his own bitter excuse of a laugh. "i cannot believe you," he argues with a scoff. "you're still as childish as ever." you felt as if daggers flew straight through your chest, the words stinging your eyes. "and you're still as cold as you can be." you said to him, your voice monotone. twilight, seeing the tears well in your eyes, takes a deep breath to calm himself down. "[name]," he says gently, "if we had choices, maybe they wouldn't put us in this position. this operation.. it's more than just ostania, you know this." his words make sense to you, they do. they should convince you to work with him for the better of the world, but it's not easy. taking a deep breath, you tug at your sleeves.
"i'll help you. i'll help you find a girl, help with the kid, help you where you need it. but i will not play your wife."
to say that slyvia sherwood was disappointed was an understatement. after the conversation between you and twilight, the two of you went in to tell your handler. it was a sort of compromise between you two, agreeing to help with the operation in anyway possible without playing his lover. he wouldn't force you into it, knowing how stubborn you would be with your opinion. the rest of that morning was spent in attempts to make conversation, awkwardly, and slight insults being thrown over the table.

you and twilight had exchanged means of communication, along with your temporary addresses. that was how you ended up staring at the brown wooden door in front of you a few weeks later. maybe i should've called before i showed up. you straighten your dress and take a deep breath, gripping onto your bag a little tighter. before you could even raise your hand to knock, the door swings open. you're surprised to see a little girl with light pink hair and the prettiest green eyes staring up at you. "are you anya's new mama?" she says to you, her eyes sparkling. you stood there, mouth hung open as you try to find something to say. that is when the door opens more, revealing twilight and a man you had recently heard of, franky. "no, anya. this is just a coworker of mine." the blonde says shaking his head. you nodded in response, crouching down and setting your hand out. "i'm.." you looked around the room, seeing a poorly drawn night sky on the fridge. "i'm selene! i'm so glad to meet you, anya." you tell the girl as she shakes her hand. she stands there shaking your hand with a slight dazed expression, causing you to smile at her before glancing to twilight for help. the blonde, who's operation name is now loid, leads the two of you back into the apartment. anya goes straight to the living room back to her cartoons as loid leads you to the dining table where papers and files are laid out. your eyes scan through the papers before you get a proper look at franky, his face caked in makeup. your eyes widen as your hand flies up to cover your mouth to stifle a laugh. the curly haired man glares at you and loid, "why can't she be your wife? why'd you have to put me in this?!" he says angrily to the blonde. loid has a look of amusement on his face, trying to hide his own laughter. "selene callan, is my friend from work. she'll be helping where she can, don't worry." loid tells his friend, walking into the kitchen. you pull out a chair and set your bag down on the table, retrieving some files of your own. "just think of me as sort of... nanny to anya, alright? i only live a few buildings away so i'm close by." you say, sorting through papers to find one you were looking for. within a few minutes, loid comes back to the table with a cup of tea, made just how you like it. you say a quiet thank you before handing him the file you were looking for. "you told me to look through names for you, no? here are a few i thought were good." you say, taking a sip of your drink. loid nods his head and looks through the names. your eyes find your way to the living room, looking at the young girl focused on her cartoons. this was going to be a long mission.

your being tugged through the streets with anya, letting the small girl lead you around the city. loid follows the two of you closely, telling his daughter which ways to turn to make it to your destination. the tailors. anya forger certainly did not look like the only daughter of a wealthy family, which is the reason you are here now. loid had suggested that they go to the tailors to buy a few new dresses for anya, his pink haired daughter just happened to drag you along with them. literally. upon arriving at the shop, anya gawks at the different fabrics and styles before being called for measuring. the young girl looks at you and her father with wide eyes as the old lady takes her hand, "i'm being sold to traffickers!!" she calls out to you two. loid, without missing a beat, replies, "you won't if you behave." he says to her. you laugh quietly to yourself, leaning lightly against the counter. "where'd she even learn that type of stuff?" you asked him, gaining his attention. he shakes his head and sighs, "i don't even know." he tells you. he looks tired and stressed, to say the least, as he glances around the shop to find any potential wives. you think that maybe you should feel bad, giving him a hard time with this urgent mission. after all, if it weren't too urgent, the agency wouldn't need the both of you working together. you're broken out of your thoughts when you feel a light breeze behind both you and loid. you shift your glance, seeing a woman who looks to be around your age walk in. you immediately recognize her from earlier that day, seeing her in the files; yor briar, twenty-seven years old with no parents and a younger brother, a civil servant. you nudged loid, causing him to look where you were. he eyes the woman before leaning down to speak into your ear. "i didn't even hear her. how'd she pass me?" he asks you, only getting a shrug in response. "excuse me," yor calls to you both, "i couldn't help but notice you two staring at me. is there something i can help you with?" you physically flinch at her voice. she noticed our gaze? was i too obvious? loid quickly turns around, shaking his head. "no, i'm sorry" he fumbles with his words, trying to find something to say. "it's just that he thinks you're really pretty!" you tell her quickly, holding your own hands together cheerfully. a blush crawls onto yor's face as she steps closer to your friend, "you're saying.. you have a favorable impression of my physical appearance?" you raise a brow, silently questioning the woman as she and loid speak. "papa! i'm finished!" anya calls as she runs over to your group of three. yor visibly takes a step back at the sight of anya, glancing at you before looking away. you and loid share a look, thinking the same thing. she would've been a good wife. anya looks at the adults before hugging herself and closing her eyes. "oh, poor poor me! i'm so lonely because i've got no mama!" she says in a sing-songy yet whiny tone. "what's this about?" loid asks no one in particular and you're about to speak to anya before you're interrupted. "are you not here with your wife?" yor says, slightly motioning to you. loid shakes his head and turns to her. "no.. sadly we lost her a few years ago. it's just me and my daughter." he says before motioning to you, "this is a coworker of mine, she's been helping me with anya recently." you gave her a tiny wave before taking anya's hand in your own.

later that night, you sat on the couch with a huff. where were you now? playing babysitter for anya. the woman from the tailors shop had asked loid to play her boyfriend at a party and, in return, she would play his wife. in the meantime, loid was on a separate mission as you watched anya play with her stuffed animals in the living room. she was cute, undoubtedly, as she talked in different voices for different toys. that is when you hear her tiny stomach growl quietly. "are you hungry? i'll cook for you." you tell her, already standing up and making your way to the kitchen. she looks at you, her eyes wide as she wonders how you heard her stomach over the noise of her talking and the low television murmur in the back. you look in the fridge as anya gets up, wobbling over to the kitchen to watch you. "i don't like carrots." she tells you and you nod in response. you take a pan and heat it up before tying your hair up, glancing at the girl. "i'll make you hamburg steaks? then hot cocoa before a bath and bedtime." you tell her, starting to prepare her meal. this time, she nods in response as she goes back to sit at the living room, looking over to you every few minutes.
when you finally set her down in bed to sleep, she hugs her stuffed animal to her chest tiredly. with droopy eyes and limp arms, she gives you a sleepy smile as you tuck her in.
"i wish you were my mama instead.."
