Katsuki stared at the television, completely entranced by the live battle between the hero and villain. All Might, the number one hero, was winning, he always did.
That wasn't fair to the villains, they never won. He knew that things were wrong with society. His cartoons always had the main character winning. But... He wanted the villain to win sometimes. He wanted the heroes to lose a little.
The villains should get stronger, he decided.
"Dad?"
"Yes?"
"How come the bad guys always lose? Why can't they win sometimes? It's not fair!"
His father's eyebrows drew close, lips tightening. "Because the heroes work for the good of society. Do you wanna be one?"
"No!" Katsuki shook his head, arms crossing defiantly. "I wanna be a villain!"
The man seated on the couch nearby frowned. "Don't tell anyone else that, okay Kats? People don't like villains. They're not good people, they hurt others"
"Oh" He pouted, deflating in defeat. "But... aren't the heroes too?"
He pointed at the television, the scene depicting the destruction of the area. All Might further proved his point by smashing through a wall. The street and surrounding buildings were destroyed.
His father fell silent, lips pressed tight again. Katsuki didn't understand why it was such a big deal. They were the same.
"Katsuki, don't tell anyone that. People will think you're dangerous. They'll lock you up"
"Really?"
"Really"
Katsuki sighed as he sat down in his seat. Around him, his classmates chatted. He was here, in this school for heroes, for what?
He copied his childhood friend in liking All Might, in wanting to be a hero.
He wanted to be a villain.
Now that he was older, he could pick out the flaws in society. Heroes were worshipped, yet they caused most of the damage over half the time.
It never made sense to him. All Might was the number one hero, but what really dictated that? Strength? Wealth? Popularity?
It was all fake, an image projected to keep those of society in an oblivious state.
He could see through it, the camera smiles, the pretending that the collateral damage wasn't just from the villains, the painting of the world into black and white.
Katsuki knew it all. He'd poured every single free moment of his time into old laws, defeated villains, heroes who had been cast aside. He looked into the original heroes, the ones from before quirks came about.
They made sense. It all did.
Society had always cast a blind eye on the dark sides of heroes. Vigilantes were looked down on, but secretly loved by the public.
Villains were always bad, but back before quirks, they achieved their goals, they played with the heroes, they didn't aim for true justice. No one did.
He looked up to some of them. Lex Luther created marvelous machines, Riddler's spectacular mind games, Doctor Octopus had ingenious inventions to increase his strength and mobility.
Once the quirks started to arise, the villains got more and more interesting.
Carnage had a gorgeous taste for violence, Gentleman Ghost's art of appearance and disappearance, Viper's magnificent range if power.
