"I'm home." I announced and closed the door.
"Welcome back, buddy!" Psyche stuck their head though the doorframe and grinned at me brightly. "Good news! Your Grandmother was here and brought you food, so you don't have to eat our... eh... food." We both looked at one another for a second, then Psyche grinned again. "We should definitely pay them a visit every once and again. Your grandparents, we mean. Not our food."
"I really don't want to pay a visit to your food." I replied while getting rid of my bag, trying not to stress about the unavoidable conversation I would be having sooner or later with the weirdo. "The librarian you've spoken to on Friday says 'hi', by the way."
"You mean Kara?" Psyche's grin seemed to brighten up, as they placed my dinner on the table. "Such a sweet soul. Was that the reason why you were late?"
I hesitated, while I washed my hands, before returning to the dining table. "Before I talk with you about my day, can I eat first?" I asked, not looking at them.
"Of course." Psyche said with a calm but reassuring voice. "Take your time. We can even leave you alone for the moment, if that is what you need."
"No..." I declined, as I wasn't sure if I would have swings of bravery and I thought getting it all out at once would be a better approach, than hesitating forever.
"Okay." Psyche sat down as well.
Rose is right. Her Parents, just as Scarlett and Max would never let Psyche come anywhere near me, if they were dangerous. They were also the first to offered me to live with them, once my parents had past. They are not bad people. I hadn't touched my dinner so far and I could feel the worried glances Psyche started to give me. Either that or my nervousness just made them feel like uncomfortable hot air in the room. Feeling the first wave of bravery I started to open my mouth. But nothing came out. Embarrassment and doubt took over and I resigned disappointed and started to eat.
How do I even approach this? 'Hey, I wanted to let you know that I snooped through the documents of experiments on children and I wanted to know what you have to do with that'. That sounds way too accusatory and will not get me anywhere. Then again, is it possible to insult Psyche? I've been insulting them ever since I met them, then again, is accusing someone insulting them? Maybe? If someone would accuse me of something like that I would just think that they are crazy... then again, I wouldn't even know what they were talking about...
I let out a silent sigh. Lowering my fork I stared at the delicious mashed potatoes with egg and spinach. A dish not everyone would enjoy but spinach was one of the healthier meals I actually loved. Weird, I know. It was just sad that I had no appetite in the moment.
"You don't have to eat it, if you don't want to." Psyche's voice cut through my thoughts and I looked at them. "Forcing it won't be good for you either. You can still eat later."
"You can't rewarm spinach." I told them. "It goes bad."
"Not if you reheat in short intervals and keep it cool otherwise." Psyche explained softly. "Other than that, you don't eat reheated spinach too often, so this shouldn't be a problem. Of course, if you're still uncomfortable with it, you don't have to."
Still looking at my food, my mouth suddenly started to speak without thinking about it. "Lenny was bullied." I told them. It was not the thing I wanted to talk about, but something I needed to get off my chest first.
"He was what." Psyche's voice had a sharp undertone, making me almost flinch.
"Five upper class men, even older than him, said really bad things to him." I continued, starring at my food, though my eyes were too focused on the memories, which clouding my vision. "Rose and I stood up for him, but the bullies didn't care. Until Nore stepped up and nearly killed their leader."
