I looked up at Cal with wide eyes and was not in the least bit comforted by his mirroring expression of shock.
A moment passed in stunned silence, before Puppy's hopeful voice broker through our mutual astonishment. "Lady not leaving?" He had leapt to his dancing paws in excitement, but Cal continued to stand silently stupefied.
As if I had been released from a spell, my mouth popped open as I began to demand an explanation but was interrupted when sparkles began to rain down from the ceiling.
Pink and purple glitter was accompanied by an overpowering smell of flowers, the pungent smell so overwhelming that I began to sneeze uncontrollably, while Puppy snarled as he buried his nose under his paws.
Cal brought his cloaked arm up to cover his own nose in a manner much more dignified than either Puppy or I, and snarled in a muffled voice, "I hate those damn fairies."
"We are not too fond of your kind either, boy." A high-pitched sing song voice sounded out across the room just before an extremely petite figure of a woman appeared perched on top of one of the many wooden chests scattered around the room. She was dressed in a garishly elaborate yellow dress, the skirts so full that if overwhelmed her small figure and the color did her no favors in how it washed out her complexion. Her sunny blonde hair nearly blended into the dress, making her waist length flowing locks appear to be much shorter than it actually was.
"How dare you interfere with my spells, fairy?" Cal demanded angrily, reaching down absentmindedly to pull me to my feet in a shocking display of chivalry.
The fairy bristled angrily, yellow wings I had not noticed before flattering with agitation. "Interfering? Me? You are the one destroying my prophecy!"
Cal sucked in an angry breath and was obviously going to say something extremely impolite to a creature with an unknowable amount of power, so I cut him off with my own (hopefully more diplomatic) demand.
"What prophecy? What in all the lands are you talking about?" I had a sinking feeling in my gut that was practically screaming at me that I knew exactly what she was talking about, but the very idea was so utterly preposterous...
The fairy gave me an annoyed glance before letting out a theatrical 'humph' and began running her fingers through her long hair, disrupting the elaborately styled curls haloing her head.
"What do I always get the idiots?" She bemoaned to herself loudly, causing the very air around Cal to darken with his burgeoning powers. I almost jumped when his hand came to rest on my shoulder in a light touch, obviously preparing to thrust me out of the way in case he decided to unleash his power upon the oblivious fairy.
"What I am trying to say, my dimwitted fools" the fairy continued, "is that I am the fairy who foretold your Fairytale, Princess Valera. And I will not even for one moment entertain the idea of allowing a sorcerer to use his filthy, corrupted, hedonistic powers to ruin my prophecy!"
Before me stood one of the most powerful creatures in all of Fairy. Not just a regular fairy, but a Storyteller. The mere power this small woman wielded in her small finger was staggering to behold. They had a direct link to the fates that controlled the lives of all creatures, were able to tell the rest of us the lives that we would live so we could prepare in the best way possible. Without them, humankind would have been destroyed centuries ago by dragons and orcs, not ruling kingdoms and leading factions in prosperity as we did today.
I would have been in more awe if she did not look like a spoiled fifteen-year-old pouting that she did not get her way.
I frowned at her in confusion "But my prophecy says I will be kidnapped by-"
