Chapter 10- Betrayal

Annabelle's POV

I laid sitting on my bed drawing a picture of something completely random. To be honest, I didn't even know what I was drawing; my mind seemed to be elsewhere today. Erase, draw, stare, erase, and draw- that was the pattern I was getting into as I was drawing. After setting down my pencil, someone spoke from my doorway.

"It's quite ironic, don't you think, everything that's happened the past few weeks."

My body tensed after the voice spoke. I didn't have to look up to know who it was, I knew it was him because he knew when to speak after I had set down my pencil.

"What do you want, Nicholas?" I demanded sharply. Was peace and quiet impossible to get around here?

"Why do I have to want something every time I come and see you?" Nicholas asked me. "Is it bad enough that I haven't seen you in almost a month?"

I sighed, Nicholas was right as usual. "I'm sorry," I spoke much kinder this time. "It's just that I've been very stressed over everything that's happened lately."

"I'll say. You've sprained your ankle, Harry and William are not very happy about you missing, and the press is everywhere." Nicholas came over to my bed and took a seat at the end, where my ankle was propped up on a pillow with ice on it. He carefully took the ice off and inspected it just like everyone else who had come in here in the past three days.

"God, Annabelle, what did you do to sprain it this badly?" Nicholas asked. "If I didn't know any better I would've thought you broke your ankle."

I turned my head to the windows and stayed silent, not wanting to answer his question.

"Annabelle?" he asked softly, turning my chin to look at him.

Nicholas' blue eyes showed sympathy- something that was very rare to me- and kindness. I wanted nothing more to tell him what happened and to trust him, but after everything I did with Harry, I couldn't bring myself to do it. Even though I didn't really like Nicholas, I couldn't help but feel guilty after what I did.

I betrayed Nicholas.

"Annabelle, please tell me what happened." He tried again. "Please, at least tell me why you ran away."

After a few seconds of silence, I still didn't answer his question.

"Is... Is it because of the proposal?" Nicholas finally asked.

I still did not answer his question, but that was all it took for him to know the answer.

"I-I'm sorry, Nicholas." I whispered, lowering my head.

Nicholas forced my chin back up again and started kissing me forcefully. I was in such shock that I didn't respond to the kiss, but even if I did, the kiss would've been nothing compared to Harry's kisses.

Once Nicholas realized that I wasn't going to answer his kisses, he stopped kissing me, looking at his hands.

"How could I have been so stupid?" Nicholas asked himself. He then looked at me straight in my eyes. "You never really did love me, did you? That's why you rejected the marriage, you didn't want to marry someone you didn't love."
