Chapter 3

Dillon

Just the sound of his voice made my blood turn to ice. I wasn't too fond of the guy to begin with, but now, he can fuck off. I don't like him. I don't know what the hell he's doing at our team event and I don't think I want to know. Tipton being here can only mean one thing. He's been traded to our team. Who the fuck is leaving? He's not gonna settle for being a relief pitcher! That means only one person is leaving... Reese.

Looking over my shoulder, I see the two people I hate the most in this world. Tipton and Carla together is not a good combination. Bailey's hand is still on my shoulder and suddenly it clenches tight, wrapping her fist around the edge of my jacket. She's scared Tipton is going to cause her trouble. Rightfully so, he has no regard for anyone but himself. I've seen it every time I've watched him play. Tipton isn't a team player. He's only in it for himself.

"You know she sleeps with every player she trains, right?" Carla is asking for it as she butts into this conversation and blabs her view on the matter. "Charisse could have been a much better choice for you. Maybe you should have looked in her direction instead of Reese. He never could get away from that loser sister of yours. Molly always hung onto every word he said and yet now that she has him, she still can't hold on to him. I bet she's still gonna chase him even after he leaves. You know, Charisse might still have you, Dillon. Now if you can drop the dead weight hanging off your dick, you might still have a chance."

Carla nods her head at Bailey, making her point. I really hate her. What did Nate ever see in this social climber? Pulling Bailey closer to my chest, I try to reassure her that I don't believe anything Carla or Tipton says. None of us do. We know they're both full of shit.

"Charisse is as much of a bitch as you are, Carla. All she wants is sex, status, and money. Molly is the right choice for Reese. Just like Bailey is more my style. I don't roll that way, you know that." I growl at the two bottom feeders.

Bailey is better than both of them. She doesn't deserve this garbage. She's smart and talented and doesn't want to be seen as a trophy. Bailey has self respect and compassion for the players. She doesn't want a guy to just see her as a sex toy. She's so much better than them, in every way possible.

Carla rolls her eyes at my comment and giggles to Tipton as if this is all a joke to them. He smirks toward us, causing Bailey to squirm in my arms. He's trying to upset her. He wants a fight just to get her in trouble. I know now he got her fired and it wasn't the coach's doing, it was his.

"You and Charisse are exactly alike. All you want is a free ride up the society ladder. That's not what Nate wanted, or Reese, or me! You lost Carla, you and Tipton deserve each other!" I go off, not thinking how my words would be construed.

I'm not thinking about whether this conversation can be heard by everyone around us. I'm not concerned about how my relationship with Bailey is coming across. Or that it sounds like I've slept with one or both of these ladies. I've never slept with Carla or Charisse. I wouldn't touch either of them. I'm no saint, but I'm not stupid. Carla is just pushing my buttons, and unfortunately, it's working.

It's all I can do to not explode over her crude comments. I don't hit women. I don't believe in it, but I'll be damned if I'd make an exception in Carla's case. She has messed with the people I care about more times than I can count. Between Molly, Nate, and Reese, she's pushed all of us to the edge. Now she's talking smack about someone she knows nothing about. Bailey is mine, and I'm not going to let Carla come after her too.

Bailey opens her mouth to retaliate at Carla, only to be cut off by Tipton. He points his finger in her face and shakes his head. Like he knows what's best for me or anyone. This dimwit is pushing his luck tonight. I don't care where we are, I'm not standing for this.
