Chapter 15
Nate
Wearing a monkey suit isn't my favorite thing to wear, in fact, I usually feel like I'm choking on the damn bow tie. It's uncomfortable, hot, and I feel like a fool in it, but to marry my girl, I'm not complaining. I'd have agreed to wear a rainbow unicorn costume if that's what she had wanted. Anything to get her to marry me, as long as I get to call her mine in the end.
Thank God she didn't go that far.
Kayleigh wanted something simple but Mom pushed for a little more. Being as the team would be there, coaches, staff and spouses, plus our family and friends, it ended up a lot more than the small simple wedding we thought. Kayleigh dealt with it, her head spinning and Mom right by her side helping with every one of the details. She's good at the details, both of them are. It was a lot of phone calls, organizing, and Mom was holding her hand through the worst to get everything together.
Good thing we're only doing this once. I don't think either of them have the patience for another wedding any time soon.
With a final dress fitting, flowers, and cake details to confirm, the caterers to meet, Mom and Kayleigh are spending the day getting Molly primed for this weekend. It's not been easy to get her back into the groove. Mom has pushed, prodded, and coerced. I think she even tried bribery to get Molly's head in the game. Even Dad got in the situation and tried to guilt her along. There was nothing either of them could say to convince her to come back. Mom was ready to give up. It took Kayleigh driving down to their house and talking to Molly to finally sway the tide.
She didn't tell me what was said. And I asked plenty of questions, but Kayleigh kept Molly's confidence and said nothing about it. I know there was only one way to get Molly here. Someone who has been beaten down and broken, who understood the pain of the situation was the only one who could get through to her. Kayleigh could relate to Molly when the rest of us couldn't. I think it was because she knows just what it feels like to be let down by too many people who were supposed to care about her. Kayleigh was the only one out of all us that could come close to understanding Molly.
Whatever she said worked.
When Molly came home with Kayleigh, she was very quiet and withdrawn, but she apologized for running off and wouldn't miss this wedding for anything. It was obvious right away that Molly feels bad about how she's handling this.
She loves Reese, I know what happened between them hurt her. Reese knows it too. I don't believe he meant to hurt her. He feels like shit over the way he handled things. I'm pretty sure he'd change it, if he could go back and do it again. The last thing he wanted was to lose Molly.
I'm not giving up the idea of them working things out. I know my sister has her moods. I know once she gets past the hurt, she'll understand, just like I did, that Reese was trying to do the best for everyone. When Molly is upset, crying, or hell raising, pissed off at you, she still cares. It's when she gets very calm, cold, and distant that you know she doesn't give a flying fuck anymore. That's when you worry. Molly's too upset and angry to be done with Reese just yet. He just hasn't figured out that part of Molly's moods.
The final tux fitting has kept Reese, Dillon, and I busy and out of the house for the morning. While the girls have their own schedule of wedding preparations to handle. We agreed for the family to meet up for dinner before we have the rehearsal tonight. I'm hoping. between all of us, we can break the deafening silence from Molly and move on.
The taboo subject, and massive elephant in the room the entire time we've been here, has been ignored. We know Dillon's hearing is tomorrow. We know he's got a battle ahead, but this isn't the time to talk it over. We've talked, analyzed, and projected outcomes. We've sat with Lance and Cade for hours to discuss strategies, determining the what if's and prepare for the worst. Nothing else needs to be said. We'll deal with whatever ends up happening.
