Chapter 11
Nate
We left them alone for the rest of the night. Dillon needed this time with Bailey to get things sorted. Matt, Lance, and I need to deal with the mess that the press is creating for Dillon. He is being tried and sentenced before we have all the facts.
"Dillon Segler drives drunk - best friends life in balance"
"Segler's bad bro influences wreck"
"Will baseball lose both Segler brothers?"
Fucking idiots!
My bad boy behavior in the past has never influenced my brother. Baseball isn't losing both of us. Not if Matt can get Dillon out of his contract here and find a better place for him. I don't think Dillon purposely drove under the influence. I think Chelsea is on to something with her suggestion that someone drugged him. We just have to prove it.
Easier said than done, I bet.
I moved quickly, when the morning staff came into the hospital. I requested the tests to be run as Chelsea had directed me. It'll take most of the day for them to work on it, but we'll know this afternoon if the guys were drugged. Then I'm going down to that bar, and I'm going to find out who did it. If I find out that it was one of those crazy chicks who did it, I'm going to take them down.
Coming into his room this morning, I walked into quite the scene. Dillon is lying in the bed, with Bailey sitting next to him. Her head resting on his stomach, his hand is entwined in her hair, the other linked with one of hers. She stayed for him. I wasn't sure she would. We still don't have all the facts about what happened to her and why she left so suddenly on him. I have a sneaky suspicion it was because of Tipton's bullshit he pulled at the banquet. I won't know for sure until I get a chance to talk to her.
No time like the present!
Walking into the room, I nudge Bailey's shoulder gently and rouse her out of a pretty solid sleep. Her eyes flutter open, tired and smudged from a long, late night. She rubs at the sleep in her eyes then looks up to focus on me. Bailey slowly lifts her head, shifting her body as she sits up, while Dillon's hand slides off her and to his side. Trying to not wake him, Bailey slips her hand from his and looks up at me warily. Motioning to the door, I head out and wait for her to follow me out in the hallway. I don't want to disturb my brother. He needs his rest.
"Morning. Is everything okay?" Bailey asks wearily, as we walk out of earshot. Her eyes glance back at the room and back to me.
"I don't know anything new yet." That's the truth. I haven't left the hospital since we first got here. I slept in Reese's room with him, since Bailey was in with Dillon for the night. I thought they needed to talk and get things sorted out between them before I got anymore involved. The rest of the family will be back this morning. We've agreed to take turns once again today with one of us sitting vigil with Reese and another with Dillon. "I need you to answer some questions for me, Bailey. You really hurt Dillon when you disappeared and I need to know why you did it. He's always stood by me, it's my turn."
She looks around at the nurses, busy with other patients, and visitors who move by us. When she looks back at me, I see the tears beginning to form in her eyes. I know this hurt her too, but we need all the information possible to put what happened together.
Nodding, she motions to the chairs in the alcove across the way. Following her lead, we go in and sit down. Taking the seat next to her, I sip my coffee and wait for her to open up. It doesn't take long before she tells me everything. Her relationship with Tipton, why she left New York, and coming here, her fears over her job and what Tipton said and did to her that made her leave.
