Lady Whistledown was known for observing individuals from left to right and composing nasty gossip. Some of the people in London found her quite clever but not Ms. Holmes. She found the Lady's work mundane and quite bothered by the topics she writes. She would characterize it as "unamusing," talking about topics that people are already familiar with. Ms. Holmes is drawn to complex and insoluble subjects, such as science and homicides. Of course, she would not injure others unless they were stupid, which she considers most people are, and she would rather investigate these homicides and other crimes that may pique her interest.
She would conceal her identity to investigate, not because of her gender. Oh no, she could care less about what people thought of her, it was merely because of her father. William Holmes, the family's Lord. For he was in a period of depression and was virtually bankrupt, so her father spent the majority of his money on her dowry, which Ms. Holmes found distasteful but understood her father's desire for his one and only daughter to marry a wealthy man. She simply assumed that finding a profession would solve their financial problems. She had read innumerable books and conducted several experiments, so she would be able to find a profession rather easily; all she had to do was conceal her gender. Which was easier said than done.
