In the crackle of the candle slightly lighting the dark of the prison, small steps could be heard coming close to my cell.
Still asleep, I laid my body still hoping they'd not notice me.
The tiny clinks from the man's armor became concentrated at my level. I heard a gentle scratching sound as a piece of paper skid from under the bars to my hair.
I peered my eyes just a tad to make out that the person was Mordred. I kept the act I was sleeping and gave a quite smile. He stayed there for a long time, just holding the bars and watching me. I did miss him. I fell asleep once more during my act but awoken at the tingling sensation climbing up by something besides me.
I laid my back on the ground and fully opened my eyes to see a beautiful flower hanging its petals above my head. Its stem seemed to grow right out of the stone floor and hang in front of smiling face.
"Oh, Merlin" I whispered.
It shimmered and sparkled in the morning sunlight being let in. I sat up and touched its bright white petals emitting a light of its own. Out of my eye's focus, was the letter given to me by dear Mordred.
I gently picked it up and read his beautiful print.

'Dearest Evangeline,

I am so sorry for failing to see you all day. The knights had lost one of the new recruits to the Saxons and we decided they wanted to rage war. I won't be able to see you again in the morning and I feel such sorrow for it. I swear I'll make it up to you.

May your time without me still let you have your smile show, and no matter where you are I will be there.

                          Yours truly,
                                   Mordred'

His words being the first to be spoken to me this morning made me smile the greatest smile. I fell back down on the hay, messing up my hair and hugging the letter.
I wish him the best luck and his safety.

Suddenly, Merlin came rushing down the steps into the dungeon with my breakfast.
He saw me fiddling with his magical gift and smiled.

"Good morning, Evangeline" he said cheerfully.

I looked over at him through the bars with a voice of relief.

"Good morning, Merlin"
I sat up and laid my letter down to meet with him at the rods of steel. He slid my platter underneath and sat cross legged with me. He watched me eat the juicy ham and loaf of bread off the platter. And I gave him two of the many berries he laced my tray with.

"Thank you so much Merlin for the breakfast, and thank you for the treat" I said turning my head towards the flower.

He looked at me and and his eyes widened and replied, "Oh, yes of course. I didn't get to see you all yesterday, its the least I could do. I went out with the knights hunting to carry all their secondary weapons and supplies. I would rather stay in the dungeons with you. Do you like it?"

I nodded and smiled stroking its stem. I then reached my hand through the opening and caressed his cheek.

"You make me so happy" I smiled slightly, "You've done so much for me"

He put his hands around my wrist and nodded, "Anything for you, Evangeline" and with that enclosed my hand in his.
Anything for him.
