The clock that hung on the wall covered in hideous wallpaper stroke 3pm. Sam was sitting in the middle of the motel room his family was staying in at the moment, clutching a pillow against his chest to try to calm himself. He was rocking back and forth in anticipation.
The clock struck again, the clock hand's showing that it was 4pm. Slowly, Sam started to doubt if anyone would come. His eyes started to wander over the room, stopping at the table. A single piece of cake was standing on top, the candles that once read 10 almost completely burned out, wax dripping onto the dry looking dessert. Laying next to the cake was a piece of cardboard on which Sam has written his invitation for his brother and father. All the other invitations Sam had written, he had distributed to his classmates in hopes they would come and celebrate his birthday with him.
Another hour had past and slowly tears started to rise in Sam's eyes as his gaze stayed fixed on the door to the motel room. Dean had promised he and his father would be back for Sam's birthday, yet he had lied again.
More cake for me, Sam thought as he slowly got up from the hard floor, his young knees cracking when he got up. The piece of Cake tasted just as dry as it had looked, and the wax that was stuck to it's top quickly got on his nerves as he had to keep pelling it off.
Sam felt how the disappointment that no one had come to his birthday party slowly merged into anger, he stomped on food onto the floor and through the cake against the wall, the bit of frosting sticking to the wall while the rest just fell to the ground and crumbled into thousand pieces. Sam let out a loud scream, filled with all the built-up pain and anger before he fell onto the edge of his bed, head in his hands.
He felt hot tears fall onto his cheeks and dripping into his hands as he mumbled quietly to himself how stupid he was to assume that anyone would care for his birthday. His shoulders started to tremble as more and more tears spilled out of his eyes.
Stupid, stupid, fucking stupid he kept mumbling sobs interrupting his speech, but before Sam could get hysterical, a warm hand was placed onto his shoulder. The young boy looked up from his hands, his eyes red and glossy from all the crying.
"Why are we crying, Sammy?"
"Everyone has forgotten my birthday, Gabe, again..." Sam felt his bottom lip quiver as he turned on the bed until he was sitting criss-cross and facing Gabriel. Dean always said he should stop believing in his "imaginary" friend whenever Sam talked about him, but for Sam, Gabriel was real, and he was sure he was an angel, how else would he be able to pull candy from thin air.
Gabriel looked at the young boy, a smile playing across his face that didn't reach his eyes. He felt sorry that such a young boy already has to leave his childhood behind him just because his father preferred hunting than celebrating an important day with his son.
"Well, well, well, no reason to cry, Sammy. I would never forget your birthday, in fact, I even have a present for you." Gabriel watched the boy's curios face as he snapped his finger and the whole room got decorated with balloons, ribbons, and confetti. There was even a huge birthday cake surrounded by cupcakes and other sweets placed on the table. A huge smile broke out on Sam's face as music started playing. As he stood up from the bed and twirled around in the middle of the room to see all the colourful decorations the sound of laughter started to fill the room and now the smile on Gabriel's face also reached his eyes as he stood up as well and spun around with Sammy in the middle of the room, both of them laughing until there were tears in the corner of their eyes.
