A childhood friend is someone that stays in your mind several years after its put to a stop. No matter how the innocent friendship ended.
That, however, only applies if the friendship even comes to a stop.
Unfortunately, it applied.
The two youngsters put a end to their friendship due to something very serious at the time. You may call it childish but for their age, it fit in just right.
Of course they, disappointingly, never saw the other again. For the boy fell incredibly ill and had to move away.
And the girl was not aware of this due to no communication.
However, that wasn't the case anymore because what's meant to be will always find a loophole.
