Not So Proud After All

"So that's it, huh?! Because I don't take over the family business, I don't have parents that are proud of me?! That's just fucking fantastic. You know what? I don't even know why I bothered coming here. I thought maybe for once! For once in my life, I'm out here chasing my dreams that you would be proud. But no. They're not your dreams so it's worthless. I'm worthless! Go dote on the fucking golden child and don't call me ever again!" You screamed, storming out of your parents house. You knew they'd have mixed feelings. But to outright say your dreams were naive and ridiculous? You'll show them. Your rideshare arrived and you headed home. You needed to unwind before you tear someone's head off.

——

The evening started off fine. Calm, peaceful, and your sister managed to get home in time for dinner. You were happy to see her despite her being your parents' favorite. You were especially excited to see Marmy. Your light within your family even if she's not blood related. She'll always be family.

"Dearie!! Congratulations!" Marmy exclaimed.

"Thanks Marmy! I'm so excited! I just really hope the evening goes well. They're not my biggest fans..." you said nodding your head towards the front parlor where your parents sat, enjoying a glass of wine and whiskey before dinner.

"Codswallop! They love you Y/N!" Marmy said.

"Hmm.. You love me Marmy. They tolerate me. Or my career path at least.." you said sighing. Marmy sighed and pulled you in for a big squeezing hug. You had asked her to prepare your favorite for dinner, lasagna with a bolognese sauce and garlic bread. Lots of garlic bread. She happily obliged and the house had smelled amazing when you walked in.

"Nat, we've got to finalize these cases by the end of the month. Divorces shouldn't be that difficult," you overheard your father as you joined them in the parlor. "Ahh there she is! Finally joining us! Sit dear, have a whiskey!"

"I know Dad. This one is particularly difficult but it's almost finalized," Natalie assured him.

"Dad when in all of my 26 years of life have you seen me drink whiskey?" You asked, an eyebrow raised.

"Fine, fine, the wine then!" He said, rolling his eyes.

"I'm fine, Dad. But thanks for the offer. I'll wait until dinner," you countered, not really in the mood for a drink right now. Although maybe it would calm your nerves.

"How are you, mom?" You asked, watching as she swirled the wine in her glass.

"I'm well, sweetie, thank you. The ladies at the country club have been asking for you, you know?" She said.

"Hmm well bid them my hello, I suppose. The country club really isn't my scene, mom," you said quietly.

"Nonsense darling. Everyone loves a steam room session every once in a while, right Natalie?" Kathryn asked. You looked at your sister who exchanged glances with you before shrugging and nodding her head. You looked down at your lap and rolled your eyes again. You might leave there without them if you keep rolling them so hard.

Saving you from your misery, Marmy called everyone to the dinner table. You were excited to tell your parents about the new job. Marmy placed the lasagna dish on the table and served everyone a large helping. She even managed to make a bowl of green beans which you do not indulge in but everyone else does. Something about the texture just feels gross in your mouth. You grabbed two garlic knots and happily chomped down on one even though they were hot as all hell. You swallowed your bite and took a deep breath, watching as the three of them were content in their dinner.

"So..." you started, suddenly grabbing the attention of your parents and sister. You smiled a bit, nervous but excited.

"Yes dear?" Your mom asked.
