Chapter 3
(Friday)
I groggily woke up to the bothersome sound of my alarm clock, beeping like a fire alarm. I pushed the covers down and kicked them until they fell off of my body completely. I sat up and pulled my fuzzy socks on over my feet, somehow feeling cold in the almost-summer Florida weather. I peered out the window, the sky a beautiful blue with only a few wispy clouds in the way, a pretty normal day in Florida. It would always either be extremely hot and sunny or a complete downpour with black clouds overhead, looming ominously. So hopefully this is a good sign? … I thought hopefully.
I quickly took a look in the mirror and grunted at my reflection. My hair looked like an unruly bird's nest and I stood there seeing if there were actually some eggs about to hatch, it sure looked there could be. I splashed some water on my face once in the bathroom and tore the brush through my knotty strands until it resembled itself hanging straight all the way down my back. I sighed, contempt. I walked back out into my room, pulling the outfit I had chosen the night before off the hanger that was hanging outside my closet. I pulled on a pair of dark washed skinny jeans, a sheer teal top with a studded collar, some silver ballet flats, and a small silver clip in my hair that pulled my bangs out of my face. I left the rest of my dirty blonde hair down. Back in the bathroom, I applied minimal makeup; the only thing I really liked playing up were my eyes. They were a soft brown color, but they had an almond shape, almost cat-like. to me it was my favorite feature. Patting a bit of concealer under my eyes and on a tiny blemish, I swiped a soft line of black eyeliner under my eye before adding a coat of mascara. Done. Grabbing my school bag, I flitted down the stairs, the rest of my family in a whir of motion.
I had a smile on my face as I attempted to greet them all. "Good morning!" I said cheerily.
My mom, noticing the jump in my step turned to look at me carefully, in the middle of pouring my step-dad's cup of coffee. "Hun, you okay? Didn't try any odd substances now did you?" she asked hinting, half joking the other half serious.
"Of course not, Mum! " I laughed as I quickly grabbed a bagel that had already popped out of the toaster. Yes, I'm American, but I'd always called my mom, well Mum ever since I could remember. Don't know why. I didn't have time to actually sit down since I'd spent a bit extra time on my appearance today. I kissed my bothers' heads, who complained out loud while they were making a mess in front of them with their pancake syrup. I pecked my step-dad on the cheek as I headed towards the door. "Bye Mark!" I called, I only used his first name, never had changed to using "Dad" after my mom finally remarried 8 years ago. My mom followed me into the hallway that lead to the front door, eyeing me up and down.
"Okay, you're all dressed up…you're happy…about school…" Her eyes widened in realization. "AHA! Am I finally going to be having a boy brought home after all this time?"
I blushed before responding, "Maybe..?" with a small smile. "I'll tell you everything later!" I yelled as I pulled the front door closed behind me. My mum and I were really close, her having me when she was only 21. We often got that we looked like sisters. She was my other best friend in a way, but it was great. We told each other everything, always very open with each other. My bagel was being held inbetween my teeth as I struggled to open the car door. Once sitting down, I replayed my mother's and I's conversation in my head…. "after all this time?" she'd sounded so excited. My hands were clenched tightly on the steering wheel, leaving my knuckles white. I was breathing a bit heavily but I tried to calm myself by looking out the window at the passing palm trees. Its true though. To be quite honest, I was actually really nervous! You see, … I'd never actually had a boyfriend, much less any type of date. The last "fling" if you could call it was the week before freshman year of high school when I found the kid who asked me out playing tongue tag with some other chick…three hours after he asked me out. Yeah, really. He ended up walking out of the movie theater with blueberry ICEE all down his pants. It was quite the sight I must say, I smiled at the memory.
I managed to make it through the whole first half of the day without any Dave encounter, but when Ashlyn say me her eyes practically bugged out of her head. "Geez Mac! He's gonna be drooling all over you!" she gushed, appraising my outfit. "Nice work," she added. I rolled my eyes at her, used to her idiocy. "Yeah, whatever" I waved her off. We started to walk towards our usual lunch table when she slammed her hand over her mouth.
"Oh, crap!" she yelled. "I gotta run! Ms. Flyn has a test I need to make up! Good luck with Dave!" she whispered the last part. Great, my wing-woman is gone. Throughout lunch, I managed to finish all my weekend homework so I would have the weekend free to do whatever I wanted as I nervously nibbled on my PB&J sandwich, an apple, and some granola. I finished my sandwich shortly after and packed my notebooks in my backpack before… my stomach began grumbling again. Ugh, why am I always so hungry? I had brought chips as an after school snack, but I really couldn't wait. The bell rang as I opened the bag of Lays chips and I started to walk out of the cafeteria. My stomach erupted in butterflies once I remembered there was only two classes left til I had Psychology with Dave…and cue the hyperventilating. I dug my hand into my bag of chips and stuffed a handful in my mouth as I turned around the corner of the hallway….
Speak of the Devil.
Dave stood in the middle of the bustling hallway, people passing on both sides of him. He seemed to be looking for something? …or someone…? Oh, gosh.
As if he could read my mind, his head snapped in my direction and I quickly averted my eyes. From the corner of my eye I saw him break out into that breathe-taking smile of his, that made me swoon. Trying not to faint, I pretended I never saw him and ducked into the closest bathroom, luckily only a foot away from me. Why am I being so immature??? Ugh, I'm so stupid. I peeked out of the doorway to find Dave spinning around in a circle with a very confused expression clouding his features. I stayed put in my place in the bathroom, taking a quick glance in the mirror. I adjusted my eyeliner which had begun to smudge a bit, but other than that I seemed to look okay. I only headed to class at the last second, the door shutting behind me as soon as the bell rang. (sigh) Oh, how interesting U.S Government could be…(cue heavy sarcasm). If it were any other day, I would probably be asleep, but my heart was beating way too fast to even think about falling asleep, or even focus on my teacher's lecture. Unfortunately, the class passed by way too quickly and the bell rang, dismissing us to our last class of the day. Well, here goes nothing.
