William had been sound asleep in the soft warm confines of Zoe's pocket. The steady beating of Zoe's heart was like a lullaby to him. He began to stir when he felt Zoe's heart beating faster.
Is Zoe anxious?
The steady beating of Zoe's heart disappeared, and together with Ebony's screams, William shot up wide awake. He suddenly realized that he couldn't feel Zoe any longer.
'What's going on?' William yelped.
'She's gone,' William heard Ryan call. 'Where are you guys?'
'Right here,' everyone else responded.
The group came together quickly. Ryan was the tallest, so he held up the fabric of the shirt to create a small tent for everyone. Everyone shared the same anxious expression under the dull white light.
'What the hell is going on?' James shrieked.
'They've been kidnapped,' Jack said. 'Zoe must have taken off her shirt to protect us.'
'I didn't hear Zoe screaming though!' David pointed out.
'They could have just knocked her out,' Jack explained. 'I'm checking if it's clear outside, stay here!'
Jack slipped back under the covers in the direction of the opening of the pocket.
'Kidnapped?' William echoed. 'Why on earth...'
'They're two cute girls,' David said. 'You do the math.'
Jack poked his head out from the pocket. He saw an open door, a smashed window, and glass all over the other seat.
They must have been committed, Jack noted.
Jack was distracted as he felt his feet getting warmer. At first, he assumed that the seat warmers of the car were active, but the heat began steadily increasing. He felt hot air pushing against his back and turned around to face the collar of the shirt.
Fire?
Jack knew he had to investigate for the safety of the group. He left at a running pace. It was difficult work running across the fabric of the shirt; it slowed him down like he was running on pillows. Eventually he saw the collar of the shirt and climbed over it. It reminded him of a volcano as he looked back down into the centre. However, instead of finding lava at the bottom of the crater, he saw a girl his size hunched up in the centre.
'Zoe?' Jack asked in disbelief.
Zoe looked sharply up at Jack. She had tears running down her cheeks. Now that Jack was overlooking the crater, he had no doubt that the immense heat was radiating directly from Zoe. Jack slid down the shirt but had to slow down as the heat became intolerable.
'You're so hot!' Jack called.
Zoe looked down at her body to see herself naked and immediately blushed. She covered her private parts with her hands.
'That's not what I mean,' Jack said.
Jack sighed. He was at a loss for what to say to comfort Zoe. He had never considered himself good at empathising with people and making them feel better. Instead, Jack decided to do what he knew he was capable of.
'It's not safe!' Jack called. 'They could be back at any moment!'
Zoe didn't respond. Jack couldn't hear her, but he knew she was still crying.
'Get under the shirt!' He ordered.
To Jack's relief, Zoe got up and headed for the shirt. Jack realised he had to back away from Zoe as the heat increased.
