The next day, in class, we were going over our internship offers that came in after the sports festival. Aizawa said that we had to have one picked out by the end of the day today or there was no guarantee that we'd get an internship. As soon as I had my list, I went over to Shoto's desk to compare with him. We'd always talked about doing our internship at the same place.
"How many offers did you end up with," I asked excitedly. I've been wanting to do a hero internship ever since I knew what heroes were. This is gonna be great! He passed me his list, and my eyes almost shot out of my head when I saw the number. "4,000? Holy shit!"
"How many did you get?"
"500," I responded flatly, suddenly feeling like a bit of a failure. Shoto looked at me with his usual deadpan expression that only I can really read. I could see bruises peeking out from under his blazer. Endeavor must have been rougher on him than usual. No wonder he looks upset today.
"It doesn't mean anything, Hana. It's just because I came in second," he explained. I nodded in understanding. "Endeavor said that if I don't choose him, he won't let you come home." My heart clenched in my chest at the thought of either not being with Sho for the internship or being forced to intern with my father. We were supposed to do this together. We work together better than anyone. I looked down at my list. I don't have an offer from Endeavor. Of course not.
"He wants to separate us." Shoto nodded in agreement. I gulped. This is stupid. "It's fine. I can stay with Ei. You don't have to work for him."
"It won't stop there, and you know it," Sho deadpanned. I sighed and ran a hand through my hair. He's right. Endeavor will keep making threats to both of us until he gets what he wants. It's what he always does. "Working for him will look good in the future," Shoto resigned, adding a small shrug. "He is Number Two."
"I'm sorry."
"It's not you. Just pick someone who you can learn from. We can work together another time." I nodded and went back to my desk to look over my offers, feeling a bit less excited about the internship than I was before. It was always something that Sho and I were going to do together without Endeavor lurking over us. It sucks that we don't get to see it through.
Some of my more notable offers were from Midnight, Gang Orca, Ryukyu, Ms. Joke, Kamui Woods, and Best Jeanist. I thought about asking Mina or Kiri where they planned on going. Then, at least, I wouldn't be alone. I sighed as I continued looking through the list, highlighting the ones that I was most interested in. My eyes landed over a name that I never expected to see: Eraserhead. I shot my gaze up to look at Aizawa, who was wrapped in his yellow sleeping bag and taking a nap at his desk. Why would Aizawa offer me an internship? I already work with him in class everyday.
The bell rang for class to be dismissed for lunch, and the rest of 1-A ran out of the door as if it was a race to get to Lunch Rush. Honestly, knowing my class, they probably made it a race. I hung back, wanting to ask Aizawa about the internship myself before making any decisions. The bell woke him up, but he didn't move from his yellow sleeping bag. I wish I had one of those. The ability to sleep anywhere would be amazing.
"Need something, problem child?" I scoffed at the nickname. I'm not nearly as much of a problem as some of the others in my class.
"I'm not Midoriya," I teased, "no purposefully broken bones from me."
"Good," he said flatly. My nerves spiked, sending a jolt of panic through my chest. I can do this. It's just a simple conversation. Nothing to worry about.
"You offered me an internship."
"I did," he deadpanned. "Glad to see that you have the ability to read." I bit out a laugh at that. I didn't know that Aizawa could joke. He's usually all about making us go past our limits or risk expulsion.
