A few weeks later, once Endeavor was released from the hospital and cleared to proceed with his life as normal, Fuyumi called to schedule the family dinner. Mom wouldn't be there of course, but the rest of us would be. The thought struck fear into my soul in a way that not much else could.
"I don't know if I can do this, Ei," I mumbled as we approached my childhood home. Sho was already there, apparently. He went early since his internship is right down the street.
"You don't have to do this, if you don't want to. We can turn around and go home," Kiri said bluntly. I shook my head, but felt my hands start to go numb with anxiety.
"If I don't do it now, I'll never get closure. And apparently closure is important, or something like that," I repeated the words my therapist told me last week.
"Then let's go get you some closure," he encouraged me, smiling brightly. "And the moment you've had enough, tell me, and we're out of there, okay?" I took a calming breath as we approached the door and smiled back at Kiri.
"Have I told you lately that you're an amazing best friend? Because you a hundred percent are," I smiled.
"And here I thought Bakugo was your best friend," he teased me. I rolled my eyes and knocked on the door.
"That's different," I muttered, feeling heat creep up on my cheeks. Kiri smirked back at me mischievously.
"Yeah, cause you love him," he teased some more, pushing my shoulder with his.
"I take it back," I teased, "you're the worst!" Kiri placed his hand over his heart dramatically.
"So mean," he fake cried right as the door opened.
"Oh! Hana, you don't have to knock. It's still your house," Fuyumi said brightly. I broke out of teasing with Kiri and immediately felt anxiety rush back through me.
"I haven't lived here in months, Yumi," I said meekly. "Knocking is fine." Her face fell slightly in disappointment, but she stepped aside so that Kiri and I could come inside.
"It's good to see you again, Kirishima," she greeted, putting the fake smile back on. Her and Kiri hugged briefly before my sister was wrapping me tightly in a hug that I couldn't escape even if I wanted to.
"Can't. Breathe," I mumbled.
"Sorry," she yelped and released me. "I just haven't seen you in so long! Sho comes by every now and then when Dad is working, but you haven't."
"I've been busy," I lied, already feeling guilty about not visiting more. I just haven't been able to handle the thought of it until now.
"I like the nose ring! You look good," she complimented me before turning to Kiri. "Both of you do! It feels like it's been years, Kirishima."
"Yeah," Kiri said awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck. "I haven't been here in forever."
"The last time was probably in early middle school," I hypothesized, looking between Kiri and my sister.
"You're right," Kiri answered less awkwardly. "I needed a textbook because Mina lost both of ours!"
"Dinners ready." Natsuo appeared in the doorway to the kitchen looking a lot older than I remember him looking. Which makes sense. I probably haven't seen him in at least a year. Maybe longer.
"We tried to make fried rice," Shoto added, appearing behind him. I smirked at Sho.
"And you didn't burn down the house? I'm so proud, Sho," I teased him. He stared at me with a deadpan expression and rolled his eyes. Kiri at least appreciated my joke and high fived me. At least someone here gets my humor.
