The group walked down the hill, all holding
onto each other for support, and then bee-lined it
to the lab when they got to the bottom. Steve and Melanie stayed at the back, he with his bat at the ready, with the kids leading a bit in front of them. They talked quietly, still arguing about everything from earlier.

"You know." The brunette broke the silence between Steve and Her. "What you did back there was really stupid.'

Steve chuckled. "Well, I am known for making
bad decisions." Melanie frowned knowing what
he meant by 'bad decisions.' Visibly rolling her eyes. Of course it was about Nancy Wheeler.
When is it not? She hit his arm lightly, "You
gotta let go of that. You did nothing wrong."

"Yeah, well, I did," Steve said, staring straight
forward. Melanie sighed and adjusted her backpack straps.

"Okay, I think I've had enough of this bullshit.
Not trying to hurt you Steve but news flash Nancy Wheeler never liked— loved you. She loved the idea of being with you because you were the king of the school. She loved the attention she was receiving, and she got what she wanted until she had enough and called it quits with you. Steve."

Melanie couldn't keep biting her tongue for
she needed to get everything off her chest. She could see the sadness written on the handsome
boys face, it hurt her to see him this heartbroken.

But this was the truth. She knew Steve knew she
was right. Melanie Henderson is always right.

"Yeah.. you're right I just... why?" Steve's
voice cracked at the end. He was on the edge
of breaking. Melanie could see this, sighing she brought him into her arms whispering "it's gonna
be okay." Over and over until he was okay.

"He's lucky to have you," Steve told Melanie
softly. As he pulled himself from her embrace. "Dustin, I mean."

The brunette was glad it was dark, because her entire face heated up, right to her ears. "I'm lucky
to have him."

Melanie looked up at him to see that he was
already looking at her, and she almost got lost
in his eyes. Almost. However, their moment
was interrupted by a shout. "Melanie! Steve!"

Lucas' yell made the two jump apart, their
arms untangling, and we rushed forward to
the kids. Melanie hadn't noticed how much
they had lagged behind."What, what's wrong?
Are you guys hurt?" She asked worriedly.

"What's wrong?" Steve asked, both hands
now clutching his bat."Look."

Lucas pointed in front of him, and Melanie
looked. A little ways away, a metal fence was standing.
