Fantasy
Magical creatures and artifacts
Spells, potions, powers and wishes
Sci-fi/Dystopian
A different world where the technology is very advanced. Maybe most of the population lives in space or there's time travel.
Or a world where people are suffering in some way. These stories usually explore something negative in current society.
Action/Adventure
Not quite contemporary but not Sci-fi either. These stories are wild and full of drama and danger.
Romance
There's a meet cute and two people fall in love (yes you're allowed to have LGBTQ stories in this category.)
Could be friends 2 lovers, enemies 2 lovers you know the drill.
Supernatural
Werewolves, Ghosts, Vampires, Demons and Angels all of those go here
Contemporary/Comedy
Set in our current times with real world problems. Could be humorous and silly like Wimpy Kid.
Crime/Mystery/Thriller
This is any story where there's a ticking clock and race to catch a bad guy. A mystery of who-dunnit. And all that jazz.
There's also domestic, action, crime, psychological and even sci-fi thrillers.
Historical Fiction
This is the opposite of contemporary.
