Ziggy stared at me, a confused and concerned look on her features. "Who's Constance?" Cindy cut in. Ziggy looked at me for an answer, though I don't have one for her. I had no idea who Constance was and where that had come from. "That's like an old old name isn't it?" Alice questioned. Cindy nodded to confirm her question. I shook my head and adjusted myself. "I don't- I don't know where that came from...sorry." I mumbled.
I looked up to Ziggy my eyes widening. Blood dripped slowly from her nose. "Ziggy!" I exclaimed. "What?" She frowned.
"Your nose!" Cindy gasped. Ziggy touched her nose slightly and looked at the blood on her hand. "What the fuck-" she muttered. I watched as blood dropped onto the skeletal hand. Suddenly Ziggy's widened and she froze up. A few seconds later she was gasping for air. "Ziggy?" I reached out and took her hand. She turned to look at me, still catching her breath. "What happened? Ziggy?" Cindy demanded. "I bled on the hand and I think I just saw her," Ziggy spoke. "Who?" Cindy asked.
"Sarah Fier...and there was someone else- a girl- kinda looked like Chloe..." Ziggy answered, her voice shaking. I rubbed my thumb in circles on her hand to call her down, my eyes furrowing with confusion. "Sarah Fier was- she was angry." Ziggy told us, moving on from her over comment, taking my hand and squeezing it. "We need to bury this thing. Right fucking now." Alice decided, looking to Cindy. The brunette gave a firm nod of agreement.I still felt slightly light headed so I held onto Ziggy's shoulder as I stood up. Alice slipped the hand carefully back into the bag, avoiding touching Ziggy's blood. Cindy grabbed some shovels and came back to us, handing me and Ziggy one. "Alright, let's go." The brunette said. "What? I have to use my hands?" Alice joked, seeing as Cindy hadn't given her anything. "No, you're staying here." Cindy told her seriously. "C'mon, I can hop just fine." Alice laughed, demonstrating a few limps around the mess hall.
Cindy shook her head slightly, it seemed like she had her mind set on the idea of Alice staying behind. "Look, after tonight, when I watched your perfect boyfriend turn into a monster, and killed the only person I've ever loved, I deserve this. I've waited my whole fucking life for this. And now I've found it. Let me see this through, for Arnie, for Tommy, for Shadyside." Alice begged.
"For Shadyside." Cindy repeated, looking to me and Ziggy. "For Shadyside." We echoed, together. My heart immediately dropped as I watched the familiar figure stand. "ALICE!" Cindy yelled. Too late. The axe swung and Alice fell. Cindy charged forward, forcing Tommy against the wall as she plunged her shovel into his neck. "FUCKING. DIE. WHY. WONT. YOU. FUCKING. DIE." The older girl screamed as she slowly teared Tommy's head from his neck.
Me and Ziggy backed away in fear as we watched the cursed teen's head roll onto the ground and his body once again slumped to the floor. Cindy dropped to Alice's side. "Alice? Alice? Stay with me, Alice." Cindy sobbed. "Alice, Alice!" Cindy cried harder as Alice went completely still, her eyes glazing over.
A chill ran down my spine as I heard a haunting voice. A girl, singing. "You always hurt the ones you love," the singing was coming from the grate. "What is that?" Ziggy whispered.
"Ruby Lane." I gasped.
"What? No- she's dead." Ziggy turned to look at me. "Think that's stopped them before?" I queried, glancing at Tommy's body and head."Cindy we have to go, now. There'll be more of them if we don't." I stood up fully. We all fled from the mess hall and ran towards the hanging tree. As we ran I felt a hand catch my arm and I screamed. "It's me! It's me!" Nick eased me. I pulled him into a hug. "The others are here." I told him. "Fuck. You two get to the tree, Chloe come with me." Nick said quickly. "How does he know about the-" Ziggy started. "Not the time, Ziggy. Just go!" Nick ordered. The sisters nodded and ran in the direction of the tree.
"Nick how do we stop the curse? You promised you would do it." I asked as Nick lead me into the woods. "I don't think it's possible. As long as there is an heir to the book, there will be a calling to it." Nick told me. "Aren't we the heirs?" I gulped. Nick confirmed it with a nod.
"Well I'm going no where near that book." I shook my head. "That's a lie because I'm taking you to it now." Nick told me. "Why?" I demanded. "If something happens need to burn it- or at least get rid of it. I can't bring myself to do it." Nick admitted to me. "I've been raised with the curse, it just feels normal to use it, to have that power."
"Nick it has hurt so many people, ruined so many lives." I told him. "I know! I know! I just can't do it." Nick groaned. We walked in silence for a moment before I spoke again. "Hey Nick, in the curse, is there anyone name...Constance?" I questioned. Nick paused to think. "There is yes, the first Shadyside killer. He killed the town's children in the church, gouged their eyes out. One of the children were named Constance...Constance- Berman." Nick told me, racking his memory for the name.
"Berman- like Cindy and Ziggy Berman?" I checked, "I think so?" Nick shrugged.
"Was there anything like- important- about her?" I pushed. "She was the first child to die, she had to be. That's how it was planned," Nick told the story a little more fluently, clearly having the memory of reading it fully back. "Why? What did she do?" I asked.
"She was accused of being a witch, accused of trying to sleep with Solomon Goode's daughter." Nick explained.I nodded simply. That had to be why I was having these small spurts of random names and memories. Some part of the curse was linking us with our ancestors. Solomon Goode's daughter, my ancestor and Constance Berman, Ziggy's ancestor. Now I had the information, what do I do with it?
