______________
The sun was starting to set, taking the last of the daylight with it. Samantha was starting to get desperate, he had to be around here somewhere.
"Charlie!" She called, her voice starting to get hoarse after an hour of yelling.
Her hope of finding the puppy was starting to fade. He had run off into the woods she was currently searching. She was scared for the little pup, all alone in these woods with the light of day fading fast. And some part of her was starting to feel nervous for herself as the shadows of the trees became longer. It's as if the thick shadowy brambles were reaching out towards her. Some people said Hawkins was cursed, but Samantha had never wanted to believe that. However, now with the shadows creeping towards her, she felt more inclined to agree with them.
Sometimes people said they saw things, things that didn't make sense. There were claims that the devil had come to Hawkins. Women who were killed, mysteriously disappeared, or claimed the devil had taken their child. She had heard claims of magical children too.
Right, as if?! Magical children taken by the devil? It was ridiculous. She scoffed to herself, stepping forward.
Samantha figured she should head back before the sun completely disappeared. She pulled out a flashlight and clicked it on, sighing defeated as she turned around. However, before she could get farther than a few steps, a twig snapped behind her. She startled and turned around fast to find nothing excepts shadows. She waved the light around a few times, watching as it skittered off the branches. It illuminated the dark of the forest, the light catching onto a brief glimpse of white.
"Charlie, is that you?" Her voiced quivered a bit, an uneasy feeling prickling the hairs on the back of her neck.
She squinted, seeing the flash of white again. She cautiously crept closer, avoiding the urge to run. She heard a rustle and saw movement in the corner of her eye.
"Hello?" She said hesitantly. "Is anyone there?"
She hoped to god she wasn't about to get murdered. To her left, a figure emerged from behind a tree. The last of the fading daylight embraced him like a glow as he stepped towards her. She thought he looked like an angel. His blonde hair framed his face like a halo. It was almost as if he had been carved by the gods themself. And then she realized, oh gods he's covered in blood.
She let out a gasp and stumbled backwards. She was definitely about to get murdered by this man who looked like he had just fell out of heaven. He held up his hands, stepping closer to her.
"I'm not going to hurt you, don't worry."
She took another step backwards as he came closer. In her blind panic, she misstepped and her foot caught on a rock. She fell backwards, her ankle scraping against the rock. She let out a shout as she hit the ground, wincing when she realized her ankle was bleeding.
The stranger stepped closer to her. "I'm really sorry I didn't mean to startle you."
He sounded so sincere. He held out his hand to help her up and she stared at it dumbfounded. Honestly, she wasn't really sure what to think at this point. He was covered in blood, wearing a quite strange outfit that was all white except for a black belt around his waist. He was also very tall she realized as he towered over her with his hand out stretched. She had thought for sure he was going to murder her. Perhaps he was a very polite serial killer?
She took his hand hesitantly and he pulled her up, making her stumble into his arms. She looked up at him. He had a very nice face. She could feel her face start to heat up as his eyes flicked to hers. They were a mesmerizing crystal blue. They almost seemed to be peering into her soul. After a moment of staring, she blinked realizing how close they were and quickly yanked herself out of his grip. He had the audacity to look mildly offended, but took a step back.
"Are you alright?" He asked, his head tilting slightly to glance down at her ankle.
She turned around without responding, starting to panic. She wasn't sure what to do. She was alone in the woods with a strange man she had just found covered in blood. He was probably going to kill her, and she hadn't even found her dog yet. She felt like she could cry. She turned to face him, finding that he was still watching her, his face of picture perfect concern.
"Are you going to murder me?" She blurted out, her arms in a frenzy.
He stared down at her in surprise, eyebrows raising to his hairline.
"Why on earth would I kill you?"
Looking back on this moment, after knowing everything about him and what he had done moments before she met him, Samantha often wondered why he hadn't.
She shifted nervously, not really sure whether or not to run. She gestured at his outfit. "Well, you are covered in blood. What else am I supposed to think?"
"Oh," he said, as if he had almost forgotten. "Well, I promise I'm not going to murder you."
He sounded so convincing, but she wasn't quite sure she believed him. He gave her a small smile. She crossed her arms, standing up a little straighter.
"Why are you covered in blood then?"
He hesitated, "I was attacked."
She raised her eyebrows in surprise. "Attacked... by who?"
"I- It's not important, but they're still after me." He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I need help... will you help me?"
She was quite flabbergasted at his request. She wasn't quite sure how she could help.
"You want me.. to help you? Which means, what? Like you want me to fight these people?! Do I look like I could take someone in a fight?"
"No no, I don't need you to help me fight them. I just need a place to hide, lay down low for a while."
Oh, of course- that made much more sense. She coughed, slightly embarrassed. She considered her options. He hadn't killed her yet, so that was a good sign. And if she said no, who knows what he might do.
Making up her mind, she said, "I'll help you, on one condition."
He smiled, relieved. "Anything."
"I lost my dog, help me find him and I'll give you a place to stay."
He held out his hand and said, "Deal."
She took his outstretched hand and shook it, ignoring the warmth that sparked there when she did. "Deal."
