The door swung open, revealing a tall, black-haired witch in emerald-green robes. Hagrid announced, "The first years, Professor McGonagall."
"Thank you, Hagrid. I will take them from here," Professor McGonagall replied, pulling the door wide open.
We followed Professor McGonagall down the hall as she welcomed us to Hogwarts. She informed us that the start-of-term banquet would begin shortly and that we would be sorted into our houses before taking our seats in the Great Hall.
She explained the importance of the Sorting Ceremony, how our houses would become like our families within Hogwarts. Each house had its own noble history and had produced outstanding witches and wizards. Our triumphs would earn house points, while rulebreaking would lose points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points would be awarded the house cup.
"I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever house becomes yours," Professor McGonagall concluded.
In a whispered tone, I turned to Draco with a smirk on my lips and asked, "How many times do you think she's repeated this line in her life?"
Draco chuckled and replied, "I bet she started memorizing the lines before we were even born."
I mentally rolled my eyes at his comment as Professor McGonagall returned and instructed us to follow her. The Great Hall was an impressive sight, and my eyes widened at the breathtaking view before me.
...
When Professor McGonagall began calling out names, a wave of nervousness washed over me. I felt my hand being squeezed, and I turned to see Harry giving me a reassuring gesture. I mustered a small smile in response.
"Potter, Y/n," Professor McGonagall called out.
My eyes widened, and Harry released my hand as I made my way toward the Sorting Hat. As the hat engulfed my head, I felt my vision partially obscured.
"Hmmm... I see, I see. You would be a great fit for Ravenclaw, but not quite suited for Hufflepuff. You possess bravery, cunning, and ambition. Slytherin, perhaps? Ah, I see. So young, yet already planning on saving the world. You would make a fine Ravenclaw, but I wish you luck, Y/n," the hat's raspy voice echoed in my mind.
"SLYTHERIN!"
I stood up, offering my brother a weak smile, and made my way to the green table, which erupted in applause. I took a seat across from Malfoy, with two burly boys flanking him. We exchanged smirks and congratulated each other.
I shifted my gaze toward the professors, and my heart raced as my eyes met those of the new professor. I couldn't quite pinpoint the reason, but there was something intriguingly strange about him. "Draco, don't you think that professor seems rather peculiar?" I asked.
Draco followed my gaze and responded, "What kind of strangeness? His constant muttering or the pile of blankets on his head?" I couldn't help but snort.
"Both. He looks like he'll be my favorite professor in this school," I replied sarcastically. Blaze chimed in, "Yeah, right! I can already imagine learning one cool spell this year!" We burst into laughter, though a quiet sigh escaped me. I silently wished that Harry was here with me in this moment.
