Elena POV
I sighed as I finished unloading my last box, looking out my new window of my boring view of Denver, a drastic change from my life in California. I can almost guarantee hardly anyone spoke Spanish here, unfortunately for my mom.
I was the only child, 14, so my mom was extra protective of me. My mother relocated us since it was expensive to live there if we weren't born with money or movie stars.
"Elena! We need to get you school stuff!" My mom screamed from downstairs and I grabbed my coat. I nervously played with the ends of my sleeves as we drove through the small town. "So. Are you excited for school tomorrow?"
I hated when she did that. When she knew I wasn't excited over much but still tried. I barely glanced over as I sarcastically replied, "Ecstatic." She nodded and soon we stopped at small store.
We got what I needed and I made a beeline for the car as soon as we left the store. I hated shopping, especially with my mom who loved to look aisle through aisle for no reason. Stores gave me anxiety and I'd much rather prefer walks.
We did our nightly routine of dinner, washing up, then prayers before I went to bed. I woke up the next morning and threw on whatever I found, not really looking forward to starting a new school.
My mom dropped me off, wishing me good luck, before heading off to her new job. I walked into the front office, being handed my slip, and left to fend for myself without even a tour of the school.
I bit my lip as I looked around the quad, students walking by and talking amongst themselves without a care in the world. I searched every locker possible, trying to find mine, but I couldn't.
"Puta madre." I cursed in Spanish as I growled in frustration, close to ripping the paper to shreds.
"Now that was out of pure anger." I heard from behind me and turned to see two guys standing with amused smiles. One was clearly Hispanic, his bandana around his shoulder length hair looked nice. The other was a blonde kid with curly hair, smiling at me with kind eyes.
"You need help?" The blonde asked, holding his hand out for my slip.
"No dipshits, she's new and obviously knows her way around." A girl said with a smile, though her words very sarcastic as she skipped beside them. "I'm Gwen. This is my brother Finney and his best friend Robin. You must be the new girl from California right?"
I nodded, clearing my throat awkwardly and showed them my slip. "I can't seem to find 304B. I'm Elena Marquez by the way."
"Ooh so you're Mexican like Robin?" Finney said and Gwen slapped his arm. "OW! What! It's a genuine question."
"You're a genuine idiot." She rolled her eyes and skipped over to me. "Don't worry, I'll show you the way. Bye boys."
I didn't even get a chance to wave to them before I was pulled as she linked our arms. Gwen was definitely a talker, I couldn't keep up with half the sentences she said but I didn't mind it. She was helping me.
"Here it is. Your first class is down the hall and the last door by the girls bathroom." She gave me a smile before walking away and I set up my lock before going to grab my needed textbooks at the cafeteria.
"Okay okay." I looked around and soon I was in front of the student office, thanking them for my textbooks and I set out for my first class.
Classes flew by and before I knew it, lunch time came but I wasn't really hungry. I slipped in my ear buds and listened to music as I finished my homework my first four classes assigned.
I didn't notice but I saw shoes standing in front of me and I looked up to see a kid with brown hair glaring down at me. "What the hell are you doing in my school."
I rolled my eyes and carried on with my music, before my papers were kicked away from me. My earbuds were yanked out and I yelped in slight pain.
"When I'm talking to you, listen. Or do you no comprende, beaner!"
I glared at him, biting my tongue before I blew up on him. "Leave me alone. I don't even know you."
"Names Billy. You don't belong in this school. Already have enough illegals here, don't need to add another."
"You're disgusting." I rolled my eyes and stood up, ready to leave when he stepped in my way. "I said leave me alone."
Suddenly I was pulled back and that familiar bandana was the first thing I noticed when I looked up. Robin stood in front of me, glaring Billy down. "She said leave her the fuck alone."
"She doesn't need you speaking for her." Billy said as he kicked my bag to the side. "But I'm bored now. Bye beaners. Feliz navidad." Billy walked off and I scoffed.
"Feliz Navidad? Pinche estupido gringo." I said in Spanish, making Robin look back at me with an amused smile. I blushed, knowing he heard and understood what I said.
"I'm sorry about him." Robin said as he helped me gather my stuff. "I could always beat him up if you want me to?"
"I appreciate the offer but no thanks. You don't need to be getting in trouble for that." I smiled slightly, thanking him as he handed me my stuff. "I'm sorry if I wasn't very talkative earlier."
"Trust me, knowing Gwen, you probably didn't have time to get a word in." We laughed at that as he walked me towards my next class as the bell rang. Robin definitely looked tough, he was tough, but he was also sweet and an amazing friend to Finney from what I heard.
"Have fun." Robin winked at me as I went inside my classroom and I smiled at him. I brightened up when I saw Finney, the seat next to him was the only one open.
"Hi Elena." Finney said as he opened my chair for me and I thanked him. "Guess your my science partner from here on."
