As I stared out to the depressing grey drizzle, I recalled all what happened during those past few months. Mom driving me to the library, the bus that went out of control, the ambulance flashing their bright blue lights, the doctors and nurses, the pain an the machines that were keeping me alive, my brothers looking devastated.
But most of all Mom's funeral.
The sun was shining and the birds were singing as if they were ignoring Mom's death. She was buried in Deans-Grange Cemetery next to her older sister, Alicia.
*small note* Melissa Furmero (on the left) is portraying Amy Farrell, mom of Michael, Lucas, and Anna, and (on the right) Stephanie Beatriz is portraying Aunt Alicia Farrell
Auntie Alicia died in a shooting eight years ago when I was 8 years old. Michael was 16 and Lucas was 13. I didn't have many memories of her because she was always away for work. Which was a bit sad. But in all my memories of her she was fierce, brave and kind just like Mom. She always had her hair tied in a plait with random colourful clips. Eight years later, my courageous, caring Mom, Amy, was reunited with her sister again.
I kept myself calm and collected throughout the entire burial, standing between my two brothers. But on the drive home I collapsed into uncontrollable tears and snot.
Lucas carried me to my room, laying me down gently and singing softly to me until Michael came in with hot chocolate for us all. Whenever something sad or shocking happened, Michael or Mom would make hot chocolate to console everyone. But Mom was gone. It was just us against the world.
That night Lucas and Michael slept on the floor of my room, just in case their little sister needed them. Which I did. So we grieved for Mom and Aunt Alicia together.
A week later, we started packing up all my stuff and other items in the house. I was moving to Sligo to live with my brothers since they were now my legal guardians.
I had to say goodbye to my life and my friends in Ireland's capitol, Dublin. Lucas was driving to Sligo with all the stuff (including my cello) while Michael was taking me on the train. Then when we arrive at the station, Lucas would meet us.
And that was where I was, on the train staring out at the miserable weather reflecting my mood, beside Michael who was snoring 💤 .
The journey was a long one, nearly three and a half hours, but I tried to keep myself entertained by staring out of the window, re-reading my favourite Agatha Christie novel And then there were none, and drawing my brother doing something silly which Michael did not enjoy.
When we go to the the station, Lucas was there with a 'welcome home' sign as if he hasn't seen us in months.
It was quite funny, I had to admit, but then I thought about Mum and how she would've laughed her beautiful contagious laugh at the sign and say that Lucas should've added more glitter. Mum loved, LOVED glitter. Tears pricked my eyes but I wiped them away and slowly got into the car.
We drove in silence for a while to Lucas and Michael's house, which I guess was now mine as well. As we went over a large bridge. Michael started talking.
" So Anna you're going to be starting Sligo Grammar School next week," he said.
" I know," I replied.
" We won't be home until six o'clock almost every day since I'm working at Liber bookstore and Michael is a manager at AbbVie, plus, he'll be working a lot of late nights," Lucas swerved to avoid a rabbit.
"Oh, that's fine. I'll be alright by myself,"
Lucas and Michael share a look.
" Seriously guys, I'm sixteen years old, I'm definitely capable of taking care of myself," I was slowly starting to get annoyed.
" We're just worried about you that's all, remember you're still our cute itty-bitty baby sister," Lucas grinned.
I, on the other hand, groaned.
" You're new to this town as well so I'm going to set some rules, wait no, guidelines that you have to follow," Michael took out his notebook, flicking through the pages.
" Spoilsport!" Lucas and I said in unison.
" I am being responsible," Michael glared at us.
I nodded trying to keep a poker face on but failed miserably and I burst out laughing for the first time in ages. My brothers joined in and for a while it was as if nothing else in the entire world mattered as much as this.
