"The great thing about new friends is that they bring new energy to your soul."

"So class, what do you think about Romeo and Juliet?" Mrs. McKenna questioned, leaning against her massive desk at the front of our classroom. Round spectacles rimmed with gold adorned her plump face and her brown hair was arranged into a tight bun.

"I loved it! Forbidden love is my favourite trope!" Harriet Greene said from next to me and it made me smile.

"Pfft, Juliet was thirteen and Romeo was sixteen! Ew, just ew," Mateo retorted from behind us and some students nodded.

"It didn't matter back then you worm! And it's just a three year difference!" Harriet yelled.

"I don't care, besides Juliet could have pretended to sleep instead of taking that stupid potion. That way she could have woken up when Romeo came to her thinking she was dead."

"But then it would've given away her fake death but the poison put her in a death –like trance so they didn't know the difference," I said, twisting myself to look at Mateo right in the eye who was staring right back at me challengingly. I saw him looking at his friends and nodding as if agreeing to destroy whoever dared to defy them.

"She just had to hold her breath when someone came to visit her so they can't hear her heartbeat properly. They didn't even have stethoscopes back then," Vivaan explained.

"Pfft – yeah try doing that for thirty minutes straight while someone examined you closely," I snorted. Mrs. McKenna observed in silence, enjoying the drama unfolding in front of her eyes.

"You have to be sly in a moment like that Valerie. If Juliet was sly enough to get away with marrying Romeo then she should've been able to do it," Mateo stated and crossed his arms, his pale blue eyes watching me closely.

"First of all, my name is Vanessa not Valerie. And second of all, just because you're good at one thing doesn't mean you're good at the other as well," I said and crossed my arms like he did to appear intimidating.

"Fight m –"

"Now now Mat, she has a point there," Ren said, his British accent shining through, and I smirked at Mateo who looked at his best friend as if he had been stabbed.

"Although we never know if she actually did have that skill like Mat said and only took the potion because she panicked. She could have been good at it too, who knows?" Ren added, winking at Mateo. Mateo immediately grinned at me mischievously while I rolled my eyes and turned back to the front. I'm in no mood to argue with them.
