The aroma of flowers lingered into my nose as I breathed heavily. Fluffy white clouds idly floated by in the turquoise sky like cotton, one of them twirling into the shape of a bunny. I paced through the park with a book in my hand, my ears being blessed by the sound of birds chirping merrily. Tomorrow was the day. Tomorrow was the day Ren would return home. Two months flew by quickly and it included me video calling my boyfriend constantly and laughing. I have never smiled so much in my life.
My feet walked over to the direction of the tree where I had spied on Ren singing. The very day Fox had a concussion: he was alright now and got expelled from school along with Mr. Hendrix who was fired. Serves them right although jail doesn't sound like a bad idea either.
Nobody came to the park at an hour like this which is why I did. I liked reading in peace. My eyes scrutinized the tree for a moment before I sat down on the soft emerald grass, turning the pages of my book to where I stopped. My mind was sucked into the world of fantasy but a sudden grabbing of my shoulders dragged me back to reality as I let out an old man like scream. My eyes widened as I saw the person behind me, wheezing like a tea kettle.
"I had to get you back for scaring me last time," Ren laughed as I beamed and jumped on him, engulfing him in a bear hug. He twirled me around and buried his face in my neck.
"I missed you," he breathed into my neck.
"I would miss me too," I said and felt his body shake with laughter, the sound music to my soul.
"I missed you too dumbass," I added and kissed him while he closed his eyes and savored the moment, his toned arms still wrapped around me.
"I was going to jump out from behind the tree and yell surprise but decided against it," the dark haired boy said and put me down while I adjusted my dress, giggling.
"When did you get here?" I questioned happily as we both sat down facing each other.
"A few hours ago. I had to get some sleep before coming here to surprise you."
"Wait how'd you know I was going to come here?"
"Well D'Angelo, it's one of my many talents to guess exactly where my girlfriend is going." A tiny coat of red adorned my cheeks as he referred to me as his girlfriend. I wondered if I'll ever get used to it.
"You asked Vera didn't you?" I smirked and crossed my arms, looking at Ren expectantly.
"Are you underestimating my talents little butterfly girl?" he smirked back at me, tucking a strand of loose hair behind my ear.
"I don't know... am I?" I tilted my head to the side innocently.
"You most definitely are. Hm, what should I do about it?" he pretended to think as I huffed out a laugh.
"I know what you can do about it," I said and pulled him into a slow kiss. I felt his tongue flick over my bottom lip as two arms snaked around my waist, pulling me to his lap. He slid his tongue into my mouth, the warmth catching me off guard and making a small gasp escape my throat. We pulled away, cheeks burning and hurting from smiling. I pressed a small kiss onto his lips again before closing my eyes and laying my head on his shoulder while he drew circles on my arm.
"I love you," he whispered.
"I love you too," I replied.
We stayed like that for a moment before both of us heard a ping go off on each of our phones.
"Must be the group chat," Ren said and took out his phone. It was in fact the group chat which included the four boys, Vera and me. Our gaze landed on a selfie of a grinning Mateo, Alex and Vivaan walking ahead of him holding hands. I chuckled at the caption: third wheeling. It surprised me when I found out that Vivaan had a crush on Alex. All of us ( Mateo, Ren, Vera and I ) came up with a master plan to help him which apparently went downhill after Vivaan transformed into a stuttering mess. Then he said fuck it and kissed Alex, at least that's what he said happened. And now they're dating. I was so happy for them. In the end, things worked out for all of us.
I got off Ren's lap as he retrieved his forgotten guitar from behind the colossal tree.
"Aw are you gonna play me a song oh Charming Princely Prince?" I batted my eyelashes dramatically at him.
"Only if you sing along," Ren wiggled his thick eyebrows at me with a grin.
"But I sound horrible!" I complained.
"I'm pretty sure I have a good enough voice for the both of us," he replied cockily and strummed his guitar strings.
"Pfft. Oh please!"
His smooth, velvet like voice flooded into my ears, luring me to join in. I sang along, my voice cracking but neither of us cared. He shot me a wolfish grin and began singing out of pitch like me which caused us to fall into a fit of laughter and wheezing. After regaining our composure, he gazed at me with those beautiful half blue, half brown eyes, a gorgeous smile adorning his face. Feeling butterflies soar in every inch of my body, I smiled as he cupped my face and gently squeezed my cheeks before connecting our lips.
I was seated next to him, both of us now silently staring at the view ahead, the guitar leaning on the tree trunk. I felt Ren place his head on my shoulder and saw him close his eyes. Guess he's still a bit jet lagged.
My gaze went back to the view before me. Brightly hued flowers of all kinds surrounded us, a gift from spring. And where there were flowers, there were butterflies. I caught site of a monarch –among all the other species of butterflies – fluttering its fiery orange wings on a bellflower. My hands wrapped around the book I previously brought to read and I brushed my finger on the cover page, my eyes landing on the scenery ahead once again.
"This is life... you, me, books and butterflies," I whispered and laid my cheek on Ren's sleeping head, dozing off to the sound of my boy's gentle heartbeat.
