Asha lay like a statue for a moment, listening to the hysterical chatter coming from the other side of the wall. Fear entombed her. She could make out around five separate voices muffled by the concrete wall, and that was only who she could hear.
"No-one in this place," One voice oozed.
"Onto the next house then," Another replied.
They were coming.
She tossed the covers from her body and grabbed her backpack, which was thankfully already packed with everything she needed. She swiped her coat and shoved it on, and then retrieved her knives from the chair. She left the gun in her bag; she didn't want to make any unnecessary noise. She then lugged the backpack onto her shoulders and bore her weapons as she stepped feather-light out of the room.
There wasn't a sound throughout the house. Everyone -including those on guard- must have been asleep. It was the only logical reason as to why no-one else was trying to get out of the house to safety.
The talking from the mystery people became clearer; they were out on the street now, their harsh voices and incoherent babbling seeped through the walls around her. She shuddered; she had to get everyone up and out, now.
She glided down the hallway, her feet barely making a sound as they padded bare along the wooden boards. She cornered the stairs and made her way down to find both Kit and Daisy fast asleep where they should have been alert and on guard. Their weapons were slumped in their limp hands and soft snores escaped their lips. Surprisingly, another person was sleeping on the sofa beside them; it was dark, but Finn's features came to light quickly enough.
Her heart leapt.
She rushed towards them and shook their shoulders with the backs of her hands, making sure the knives didn't touch them. Kit awoke with a start, spit catching in his throat.
He coughed loudly and Asha quickly shushed him with panic running through her stare. He immediately quietened and looked at her with confusion before realisation set in.
Daisy perked up clumsily, holding her gun tighter to her chest, her cautious eyes never leaving Asha.
Finn shot up like a bolt at the commotion.
"There are people going house to house. Probably Hunters. We need to get out, now," she whispered, her eyes darted wildly around as the sounds of speaking got louder from outside.
Kit's eyes widened and a look of guilt took over him; he was supposed to be on guard, he was meant to be protecting them.
"Shouldn't we hide instead of going out there?" Daisy questioned. And she did bring up somewhat of a point.
"If we hide, there's more chance of a fight. We are so close to Harbour; I'm not risking losing anyone. Finn, you filled the car out back with petrol, right?" Asha asked, her worried eyes burned on his.
"Yeah, it's full," Finn said quietly, nodding his head wearily.
"So that's where we go. We need to be as quiet as possible. Finn, Daisy you go to the car and make sure it's ready. Kit, wake Max and Piper. I'll get the girls. No guns, no noise. We don't want them to find us, we don't want anyone to get hurt. Go," Asha ordered. Her skin burst into goosebumps as the cool air in the house took effect on her bare legs.
The others nodded their heads in agreement, and they all shuffled out of the room, taking care of how loudly they trod.
Asha and Kit tiptoed up the stairs. At the landing, they gave each other a final look before he went right and she, left.
