6:25 PMDonnie stared down at his reflection in the black and white tiled floor. The image of an olive skinned boy with glistening green eyes and messy black hair that went past his ear lobes stared back at him with the same bored expression on his face. He was soon snapped out of his trance by the voice of his annoyed mother.
"Donnie honey would you like crayons and a coloring sheet? The others are waiting for us and I can't have you spacing out right now" Donnie looked up and scratched the back of his head only offering his mother a small glance. "Mom I'm 16, c'mon I'm not a little kid anymore." The woman rolled her eyes and turned to the hostess giving a causal "no" to the coloring page question. After a minute more of talking the hostess smiled and lead them down the crowded hall and into
The main dining area. The main room was full to the brim with activity. Waiters and waitresses frantically moved about taking orders as a jazzy tune hung in the air pumped through the large overhead speakers that loomed over the colorful room. Donnie walked and stayed close to his mother taking in the sights that surrounded him. They were soon lead into a side a room where a group of kids and adults alike were sitting down at a large long table. Donnie walked sluggishly towards the tables not offering anyone a glance of acknowledgment on the way. His mother quickly left his side and rushed over towards the other parents greeting them with a smile and immediately getting launched into a full conversation. Donnie rolled his eyes and turned towards the other kids momentarily thinking about interacting, but noticed all of them were far younger than him. With a sigh, Donnie turned away and sat at the far end of the table alone.
Donnie sat in silence while everyone around him was off in their own world. This wasn't the first time Donnie had done this dance and he wasn't surprised that this would be the case yet again. To most people, Donnie Hardbrook
didn't exist. Sometimes he wondered if his mom even remembered that he was her own son. She seemed to be on autopilot most of the time only acknowledging him in passing. To remedy this issue Donnie ditched his reality and escaped into comics and movies. But not just any kind of comics and movies, horror comics and movies to be exact. Donnie's tastes were often a point of contention between him and his mother especially the part about his love for punk and metal music. It seemed the only time his mother really acknowledged him was when she was pointing her finger and telling him off for listening to "noise pollution." Donnie chuckled to himself a little as he mimicked the nagging voice of his mother in his head as he imagined that last part.Donnie however was soon snapped back into the current moment when he heard the kids around him getting riled up. Donnie looked around for the source of the excitement but found nothing besides the highly decorated walls which had pink and yellow neon lights going along the side of them in the shape of music notes and records disks. But suddenly Donnie began to hear what the commotion was about coming from outside the main door. The sound of footsteps-no, of footsteps and rolling wheels began to come closer and closer. Donnie turned around fully to face the door now, tilting his head a little. Donnie for a second scooted down his chair next to a little blonde boy and leaned over. "Hey uh, do you know what going on?" The boy looked over at Donnie with a big gleeful smile and spoke, excitement stringing his words along. "The rockin' roller gang is coming to start the party!" Donnie raised a brow in response. "The what?" The kid looked back at Donnie and was about to speak but was cut off by the sound of the door opening.
The room erupted into cheers and excitement as the door fully opened. At the door stood a hostess with curly brown shoulder length hair. She seemed to wearing a small microphone on the side of her head so that she could be heard over the commotion. "Hello everyone!" The woman beamed, her red lips painted in lipstick forming into a wide smile. "I heard that we have a very special birthday boy in the room with us tonight." She scanned around the room briefly before focusing on a little kid with short black hair. "And we here at Baby's Rockin' Roller diner believe that birthday's are the most magical time of the year!" The group of kids still talked excitedly in anticipation for something that Donnie was unsure of. "So with that in mind, we have brought in some very special friends to help make this birthday be the very best it can be for our birthday boy!" Donnie exhaled, he hadn't even realized that he had been holding his breath. All he could think about was how the anticipation was killing him. The woman stepped aside and with a swift movement a yellow skate with red stripes stepped into the doorway.
