She had to be lost. That was the only possible explanation right, For why she was standing in front of this huge building instead of some small shop as her aunt had described the place. She just couldn't believe it, so she checked the address she'd written on the paper in her pocket. Ha, it was wr..... Nope; it was right. She dialed the number she had written next to the address.
"Hello?"
"Aunt Elaine?"
"Yes, Amanda darling. Where are you? I was expecting you half an hour ago."
"Yes, well, I was expecting to be there half an hour ago, but I think I mixed up the address. There isn't a small shop at the address I wrote."
"A small shop, huh? I may have exaggerated or it may have been my opinion, I prefer the last. You see, the shop may look big to you, but I have bigger dreams for it."
"You did not tell me that you wanted me to run a company. You haven't even told me what company."
"Come on up and I'll tell you."
"Aunt Elaine? Aunt Elaine! She hung up on me?" She took another look at the tall building and sighed. She entered the building's lobby and went to the receptionist's desk.
"Excuse me, Madam, can you tell me where the office of Miss Elaine Deward is?"
"I am sorry that you came all the way down here, but Miss Deward only accepts visits by appointments."
"Yes well, she is expecting me. I'm her niece."
"Madam, Miss Deward does not have any family, and excuse me for saying that I can see no resemblance between you two."
"Obviously she has family because I just told you I am her family." And of course, they had a resemblance in many of ways but then again her aunt was a petite woman and she wasn't. People just could not get past size, huh?
"Let me make a call."
"Yeah, why don't you do that?"
"Your name would be?" "Amanda Deward."
"Hi yes, good day madam, are you expecting an Amanda.... Yes madam, no madam, yes right away." She jerked at something said on the phone and looked up even as she hung up. "Madam, I am truly sorry. Do accept my apology. Your aunt is waiting for you."
"Thanks. Which way would her office be?" "On the second floor, madam. I guess you would know about her fear of heights."
"Yes, I would. Thank you."
"Madam?" Amanda looked back as the woman called to her with some degree of nervousness. "Yes?"
"Please don't fire me. I was only trying to follow department policy."
"Really? Well, department policies need some improvement. Don't worry though. I won't fire you."
Damn, she was sure she should fire herself first. This was way above her capabilities. She took the elevator and landed on the second floor, where her aunt was waiting for her as soon as the door opened.
